June 2018 Newsletter

President's Letter
June is here and our guild year is winding down.  We have had wonderful programs this year and still have one more great speaker, Joyce Hughes, to look forward to at our June meeting.  In addition to that, we have lots to do.

Here are some things that YOU as a member should be doing:

1. Renew your membership.
2. Make pillowcases.  See below, there's actually a prize!
3. If you are a committee chairperson, send your annual report to me before the June meeting.
4. Ask yourself how YOU can help our guild.  There are lots of ways that everyone can help, in small or big ways.

Our new board of officers will take office on July 1.  I think they will do a great job.  Wonderful people have stepped forward.  We will also recognize the Volunteer of the Year for the guild at the June meeting.

I have really enjoyed being your president for the past two years.  My mission was to make the guild a better group.  One of my goals was to get back to following our by-laws and policies and procedures.  I want to thank everyone who helped the guild run as smoothly as it does.  Keep up this great work!

See you in June,

Stephanie Braskey

Penn Oaks Guild Meeting Minutes
May 14, 2018

7:00 p.m. President Stephanie Braskey called the meeting to order

Stephanie announced that Charles Moses is going to donate Betsy's quilting fabric and supplies to Penn Oaks for silent auction at the September meeting.

Jamie Loncaric asked the group if anyone minded if she took pictures for Facebook. Backs of heads only. There were no objections.

Stephanie asked for any additional volunteer of the year nominations. There were none. Nominations are now closed and the Board will vote on the winner. The winner will be announced at the next meeting.

Stephanie announced that Diana needs a helper at the membership desk during arrival.

The group presented a wonderful show and tell.

Programs - Rita Marie Smith and Linda Kerschner

June 11:  Joyce Hughes is an award-winning, self-taught quilter, lecturer, fiber artist and instructor.  Her lecture is titled "My Journey into Quilting."  It is a very open and inspiring talk about how she started in quilting, leading into art quilts with thread painting, finishing with ideas to use with panels as art quilts.  Joyce's main subject matter will be working with fabric panels showing how, with a little embellishing and/or thread painting, a panel becomes a piece of art.  Learn about the preparation of the panel for a project, the freedom of using thread painting, adding embellishments of ribbon, markers, paint, crystals, etcJoyce will have thread, fabric and panels for purchase.

Hospitality - Angel
June Snack list
Snacks for the June end of year celebration meeting will be a surprise generated by the guild. In order to plan for quantities please text Kelly whether you will be attending or not and she will relay the info to me.

Membership
Diana is looking for a helper at the Membership desk while she is attending the board meetings that is held an hour before the meetings. Is there anyone available around 6:00? We feel it is important for someone to greet our guests that may arrive early.

Pillowcase Challenge

If you are looking for an easy project for summer, consider making pillowcases for Ryan’s Cases for Smiles. Rita Marie and Linda introduced this challenge at the May meeting. The guild member who makes and delivers the most pillowcases before or at the November meeting will receive a prize. There’s nothing like a little competition to help a good cause!

Cindy Kerr will be presenting on November 12th, and we will be giving her our guild’s contributions to the charity she founded to honor her son.

Thank you to everyone who picked up a pillowcase kit at the May meeting, and to Carolyn Davis who put together many of the kits from fabric in her own stash. We will have additional kits at the June meeting. Since the fabric is already washed and cut, it will take less than an hour to finish a pillowcase. Please wash your completed pillowcases before passing them on.

If you have any questions about the challenge, contact Linda Kerschner at linda.kerschner@verizon.net.
