January 2021 Newsletter

 President's Message:

We had a wonderful December meeting. 20 members attended to swap blocks and play Quilto.  Thank you Jen Burke for all your planning and hard work.  Our January program will be a collage quilter. I look forward to hearing this speaker. But rest assured, if there is tiny pieces, you won’t see me doing it. I do have size limits.

 Website:

Thank you Maureen for developing a new website for us. It is fresh, colorful and inviting. Maureen would like input from others as to website content. Please call or email her.

 Reminders:

Sew Along deadline: quilt is due by February 8th. Just the top needs to be completed. Please send pictures to lynntelson@gmail.com.

Challenge quilt deadline: This has been moved to June 14th in hopes that we will be meeting in person.

Sew In: There was some interest in the guild having a sew in for a few hours. I plan on scheduling  a zoom meeting for the 4th Monday of December as our first day. Time will be 1-3 PM. Hope you can join.

2020 is coming to a close and I am sure everyone is thankful for that. I hope 2021 will allow us to meet in person, and bring everyone better times.

I wish everyone happy holidays and a welcome, New Year

We would like to welcome Ellen Lance back to our guild. She has been missed.

 Merry Christmas, Kathy

Corresponding Secretary - Maureen Carlson

While I personally have not talked with Suzanne  Stiverson, I have heard from someone who has and Suzanne continues her recovery from the October 30th major surgery slowly but surely.  The guild has sent her flowers which hopefully she can enjoy through the holidays.  I'm sure she would enjoy receiving cards of encouragement from guild members to help her with her long recovery journey.

Holiday Greetings Quilters!

I'd like to thank everyone who has donated charity pillowcases, masks, Quilts of Valor for Main Line Home Care and Hospice, and food for the Honeybrook Food Pantry, this year.
It has been a long one and I'm sure like me, you are all ready for 2021! Great things are headed your way. I can't wait for in person sewing time with friends.
If any you would like donations picked up, please let me know and I can arrange that with you. Please remember to let me know if you have sewn any charity items and dropped them off yourself. That helps me update my numbers.
Please continue your charity efforts when you are able. Try to enjoy this holiday season in creative ways; maybe a new tradition is in order?

December 2020 Newsletter

President's Letter

Well it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and any December holiday I missed time! Have you finished your gift shopping and/or quilting? Soon it will be the New Year. I pray 2021 will be better than 2020. So far I am enjoying retirement. I manage to keep myself busy, daily. I have been experimenting with Sourdough Bread Baking thanks to Maureen who gave me some starter.  I have been making a No Knead Bread also. It is quick, easy and rises overnight on the counter. There is nothing like fresh out of the oven bread with olive oil or butter, yum.

 Veterans Quilts:

I want to thank Carolyn Davis for all her time assembling and distributing kits, quilting, obtaining volunteers, donating fabric , batting and overall organizing of this project.  Thank you to Myrna Paluba and her sister, Maureen Carlson, Deb Houck, Elaine Egan, Ellen McMillen, Cindy Vognitz, Jen Burke and Rikki Newlander for their participation in various parts of the veterans quilts construction ie.. making tops, quilting, binding, donating fabric. To date we have donated 30 quilts and have approximately 17 more in construction. Way to go gals!!!!!

We need backing fabric for 4 – 42” square tops. Please contact me if you can donate fabric.

Holiday Block Swap:

Just a reminder. Please send your completed block to the person you are making a block for prior to the December meeting. If you are unable to do this, we can have you show your block during the meeting and you can mail it later.

Website/Logo:

We now have a new logo and banner. Keep a look out for both in our newsletter, facebook and website.

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Wishing the guild and their families a Happy New Year as well.

See you at the December meeting.

Charity Outreach - Elaine Mayer

Hello Fellow Quilters!
I must start my post with an apology for omitting the Quilts of Valor from my November post, but someone picked up the slack for me and got the job done. We continue to work on these quilts for Main Line Hospice Veterans. There are still kits available. If you don't want to go out, please reach out for a delivery.
We continue working on pillowcases for "A Case For Smiles". Please send your numbers to me of any donations you make so we can have a year end total. We are still participating in the food drive for the Honeybrook Food Pantry. There are several drop off spots as well as St. Peter and Paul Church (the second and fourth Saturday of the month the trailer is there.
Additionally Penn Medicine Home Care is still in need of masks.
A special Thank You to Myrna Paluba who made 10 Chester Bears; I will hold them for a couple weeks in case there are more to add to this collection, before I drop it off at Chester County Hospital. Her great arm waving made it easy for me to pick the bears up last week!
As Lisa Scottoline said in her article in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer, consider this year a break from some of the normal stressors brought about by cooking and entertaining large groups.
Wishing you all a lovely Thanksgiving,
Elaine Mayer

Thank You Note from Good Sam

November 2020 Newlstter

 President's Message

HAHAHAHA: I saw this picture when going through old newsletters and just had to put this in. I am sure we can identify with this picture as we have seen women like this at quilt shows. And perhaps some of us can identify personally, (absolutely not me).

We are now in turkey month! Have you been working on Thanksgiving table runners, holiday decorations etc? I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

The presentation from Karen Miller of Redbird Quilt Co. was fantastic. I have never used Aurifil and now powered with her information, I will try it. Thank you Jen for arranging this presentation.  If you haven’t been attending, you are missing out on great speakers. Watch your email for our November Zoom meeting. Read Jen’s message below for more information.

Autumn is officially here as the weather is getting cooler.  Some of the trees have orange, yellow and red leaves. I love the fall colors. Speaking of fall, that is one of the seasons you can choose for your challenge quilt.

Unfortunately we will not have a getaway in February. Wearing masks and social distancing sucks the fun out of it. Let's all look forward to 2022. I want to thank Ellen and Cindy for their diligence in trying to make this happen.

Our sew along is now over. Thank you Kelly for all the work you have done for us with this wonderful sew along. I have 48 blocks to put together into a quilt by February. I have been interviewing sashing fabric and finally chosen one. Goal: get it put together and quilted by February. On the back burner as I have some kids quilts to finish for the holidays.

We received the below thank you letter. These quilts were some of the 44 donated to local shelters by Brenda Calhoun. Let's continue our charitable work throughout this year, it is greatly appreciated.

Suzanne Stiverson is having a big follow -up surgery on October 31, from her cancer surgery 7 years ago. She will be in the hospital for 5-7 days and perhaps rehab after.
Jack, her husband,  will send updates and we will forward the guild with the information.

I will see everyone at the November meeting!

President Lynn Telson

Programs - Jen Burke

Programs

As a reminder, Lynn has asked us to invite a friend to each of these programs if we can!

Thanks to all of you who attended the thread lecture. Your swag has arrived, and I will be delivering it to you by Halloween. Please be patient, I will get it to you, I promise. If you happen to be traveling through the exciting borough of Malvern and want to do a porch pick up, let me know (910-381-8214 or usnmcdoc@yahoo.com) and I’ll leave it on my porch.

November -  Beth of Eva Paige Quilts will be demonstrating her “accordion” method for scrap quilting. She has created a way that you can sew scraps together into half-square triangle accordions and make beautiful tops. She will be showing us the methods as well as having a trunk show. If, after the meeting, there is enough interest, I will be setting up a Zoom class (likely on a Saturday) for us to learn the method fully. This would not be covered by the guild, but the more interested, the less it would cost us as a guild!

In December we will be playing Quilto on Zoom. So wear your favorite ugly sweater (there’s a prize) and plan to have a cocktail or mocktail and join us for some Quilto.

Membership - Bob & Kathy DeCarli and Marianne Caporale

The last Zoom meeting was well attended we had 21 of our 30 members and one guest. It was good to see Stephanie again. The speaker was great, thanks Jen. I hope I get some 28 weight thread in my stocking this Christmas. I have been sort of good. I’m sure Bob will have something to say about that.Martha Hopkins won the guild door prize generously provided by Ellen McMillen. If you have a sewing item you would like to donate to the next meeting please let me know. The speaker provided a lovely door prize won by Elizabeth Young.

If you choose to deliver, please let me know how many items you have donated. Additionally, any of you who are still making masks; Penn Medicine Home Health Care is still in need.

Flower Blocks

Thank you to everyone who made me those beautiful blocks over the summer. They are so pretty and I promise to get it on the make-it-into-a-quilt schedule. I really appreciate all the time and effort you all put into the blocks. Kelly Meanix

Sampler Sew Along - Kelly Meanix
Our Sampler Sew Along has come to an end. I hope everyone who sewed along with us had a good time and enjoyed this fun guild activity. Maybe you even learned something? Tried a new technique? I really enjoyed leading you through this quilt along. I never dreamed that 6" blocks would be such a hit!

So now is the time to get those blocks finished up. The goal is to have your quilt TOP complete by the February 2021 meeting. If you happened to have it quilted that is fabulous but not necessary. Everyone who has a completed top using at least 30 of the blocks will be eligible to win a $25 gift card from the Old Country Store. There could be some surprises too.....I would love it if you would let me know if you think your top will be together by February. Send me a quick email at Kellymx@aol.com

Here is my quilt top complete. As you can see I did sashing with some small "dots" or tiny squares. Plain white sashing felt too blah but big corner squares felt too big. These little spots are 1/2"square. I like how it feels and I will probably add a striped or polka dot binding to finish it. I will be honest and tell you I had to push myself to do the sashing. Probably like most of you I wanted to be done and move on. I am so glad I didn't do that and took the time to make something I really like. The sashing gives the blocks room to breath and you see them better in my opinion. That being said, do whatever makes you happy! It's your quilt.

Thank you again to everyone who sent me emails and even those that had questions about how to put the blocks together. In this weird time it made it nice to connect even a little bit. I loved seeing every block, your color selections and all the different ideas on how they are going to go together. Quilters are the best!

2021 Winter Getaway

We're disappointed to announce that the February 2021 Getaway has been cancelled. There was a large response to our email; our thanks to all who took a moment to reply. The majority of the guild responded that they did not plan to attend the Getaway, while four members responded that they did plan to attend. We're sorry to have to pass on this Getaway and will certainly miss it. On a brighter note, the 2022 Getaway has been scheduled for February 23rd through 27th. Mark your calendars.

We look forward to better days.

October 2020 Newsletter

President's Letter

First off I want to congratulate Kelly Meanix for being featured in the August 50+ Life Magazine regarding her quilting journey. Your can read the article on their website.

We enjoyed our first meeting in September with Barb Vedder as speaker. 29 members and guests were in attendance. Barb remembers coming to speak at our guild in the past when there was cake tasting. I am guessing this was for the food at our show. I was not a member at that time.  Everyone enjoyed listening to her presentation on solid color quilts.

We now have 38 members per Kathy. Thank you to all who rejoined and welcome to any new members. Blank membership cards were emailed to everyone. Please inform me of members that are unable to print their card and I will mail one.

I am retired at this point. Even so, there has been weeks where I don’t get to the sewing room. I will have to change that as I do have things to work on. Hope everyone is completing projects and sending them to Kelly for Show and Tell.

As a way to keep members connected, Robin McMillen came up with the idea of a Mystery Box. You should be hearing from her soon about this idea and what it entails.  I am looking forward to participating.

Maureen is now web mistress for our website. Please reach out to her as she needs assistance with ideas.

Our sew along will be ending in October. THANK YOU KELLY for all the work you did to send us 3 blocks a month for a year. I have enjoyed putting them together.

October we will be hearing about Aurifil thread. Watch your email for a zoom invite for October 12th. I have never used this thread but have heard good things. Perhaps it is time for me to give it a try.

As the weather continues to get cooler, I think all of us will be spending more time in our sewing rooms, I will.  Enjoy fall with cool crisp weather.

I will see you at our October meeting.

October

Karen of Red Bird Quilting will be presenting her thread lecture. This is action packed and sure to make you learn more about thread. This lecture is 2 hours, so we will have to “zoom” through our initial meeting to get to the Zoom lecture! Bags of goodies from Aurifil are promised, you won’t want to miss this!

In December we will be playing Quilto on Zoom. So wear your favorite ugly sweater (there’s a prize) and plan to have a cocktail or mocktail and join us for some Quilto.

Membership - Kathy & Bob DeCarli and Mariane Caporale

There is nothing like a fun meeting and a good speaker to keep one motivated. We had a good time at our first meeting . Thanks Jen for the great speaker Barb was great! We had 18 members and 10 guests. Zoom has made it possible to keep in touch With our quilting buddies. The door prize was won by Deb Houck. We now have 39 members.

Survey Says:
Thank you everyone who responded to the recent Penn Oaks survey regarding virtual meetings.  Thirty one (31) members responded and unanimously voted to continue with virtual meetings. The Programs chair will proceed and continue booking us virtual speakers and planning virtual events. This decision will be periodically re-evaluated especially as pandemic conditions change.

The Christmas Block exchange received 10 "yes"s to hold the block exchange this year.  Details to come.

Sampler Sew Along - Kelly Meanix
We are coming down the home stretch of our Sampler Sew Along. The last blocks will come out on October 1st, 2020. Are you keeping up or way behind? Do what you can and be sure to show us what you made no matter what the size. This was a way for the guild to work on a group project and we applaud everyone who made blocks.

I am so excited to see what everyone comes up with...... Are you thinking about your setting? My quilt top is complete! I will show it to you next month. I did all the blocks except one, can you guess which one? Using your design wall will help if you are thinking about doing sashing and how big or small you want to make it or maybe not at all. The choice is yours.

Don't forget about the signature block. Write your name, the date, Sampler Sew Along, Penn Oaks, Pandemic 2020 whatever you want. This is a way to make it your very own. That white  piece on the block is very large and sticks out, so put something there. I am pretty proud of my embroidery on the block though it needs some serious practice....

If you have an odd number of blocks, feel free to duplicate a block you like. Maybe make it in different colors or just add a few four/nine patches if you are feeling like you just need to be done!

The goal will be to have the top together for the February meeting, that gives you 4 months. Extra kudos for having it quilted! The board has agreed to a Gift Card prize! I will pull a name from everyone who has completed their top just like last time. The only requirement is that 30 of the blocks that were sent out must be in the quilt. To take the pressure off, let's try and get it quilted by June 2021. Maybe (fingers crossed) we can meet in person and have an awesome show & tell for our last meeting of the year.

The extra paper pieced blocks do not need to be included but can count as your 30. There will be an extra surprise!!!???? Questions? Call or email me. kellymx@aol.com  610-873-7211

I really enjoyed sharing these blocks with you all and who knew there would be a Pandemic to mark the year! I hope you all had fun and learned some new things to add to your quilt tool box. Happy Quilting!
Kelly

Community Outreach - Elaine Mayer
Hello Quilters!

Just a brief note from Community Outreach. Last month we donated 55 lbs of food and $50 in cash that I am aware of. This is not counting any food taken to Kelly's church.
We are continuing the Chester Bears (for those of you that don't want to sew bears, maybe a fabric or batting donation), the pillowcases for "A Case for Smiles", and support for the Honeybrook Food Bank. Rikki Newlander is collecting masks for Penn Medicine Home Care.
Yesterday Elaine Egan dropped off 17 pillowcases and I know Marianne Caporale has made a bunch. This adds to the donation of 16 from Carolyn Davis in the winter. Thanks to all for your generous donations! You may either drop pillowcases at Joannes or other collection sites, or I am happy to pick them up from your house. PLEASE keep track of how many you have donated so we have an accurate tally.
I am looking forward to in person meetings and sewing with others, and I know many of you feel the same way.
Thank you again for your donations!

2021 Getaway-Ellen McMillen and Cindy Vognetz

Hello quilters! Our Getaway is still on the calendar. We recognize the uncertainties created by Covid. Please give some thought to the Getaway and let us know your feelings and/or interest in having this event. We will continue to hold the Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. The 2021 Getaway dates are February 17-21. The sewing room fee is $477.00, which includes the 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. The number of attendees the room can safely accommodate with social distancing is 16. The sewing room fee would be approximately $30.00 per person. Should we have a smaller group who wish to attend the Getaway there is another conference room available on the first floor of the Inn. This room can hold a maximum of 8 quilters. The sewing room fee for this room is $424.00 which results in a per person fee of $53.00. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $116.65 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $166.50 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation.

Danielle Dowlin, our sales contact at the Amish View Inn tells us the following about how the Inn is functioning under current restrictions:
The Great Room falls under “restaurant restrictions” and is currently operating at 50% capacity, while also maintaining 6ft. social distancing. We are offering our full breakfast buffet, but masks are required at the buffet, a queuing line is in place at the buffet, and disposable gloves are available to use before touching buffet utensils. All items that were available pre-COVID for special order are still available, and of course, many hand sanitizing stations are available both in the Great Room and throughout the hotel. If you are staying multiple nights, we are limiting staff/guest interaction and will be offering a modified daily stayover service. Our staff will be happy to make sure you have refreshed amenities, however staff will not be permitted inside an occupied guest room unless there is a special circumstance requiring attention. Masks are required at all times except when seated in the Great Room to eat. To keep one another safe it is likely that wearing a mask will be required in the sewing room.

We will send a follow-up email in early October requesting your opinion about holding the Getaway. Take a look at the Amish View Inn website (www.AmishViewInn.com) for more information about this venue.

 Sewing Machine for Sale!

Hi Quilters,

Sara Reindel, donated to the guild, an vintage Singer 329K made in the early 60s.  It is a cute blast from the past.  It sews and has all the attachments and materials.   It is heavy but I oiled it and had it up and running, the light works too.  If anyone is interested please email me.  I looked online and a reasonable price for this machine is $125.00.  All proceeds would go to the guild.  My email is robin_mcmillen@yahoo.com.

  • • Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, machine appliqué, hand appliqué, machine or hand quilt, etc.). We encourage you to challenge yourself and be creative.
• Fabric Requirement: You can use whatever fabrics you want in your challenge. There is also no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used in your challenge.

  • ALL QUILTS ENTERED IN THE CHALLENGE WILL BE DISPLAYED.If you have any questions about the challenge please contact Angela Brant at angelalendenbrant@gmail.com or 484-682-387
