July 2014 Newsletter

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Happy Summer Everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying the sun and  warm weather the season brings us. Best part of all - no snow! Enjoy it while we can.

It is my pleasure to support the Guild as President for the upcoming term. The Guild is in good shape and I thank the Officers, Board Members, and Committee Chairs, past and present, who work so hard to keep the group running smoothly.

This year we look forward to some great programs. Yes, I have inside information about the plans and Suzanne Doonan has a good year in store for us.

This is a show year. I hope the easy living of summertime is giving us all time to create our show quilts and raffle quilts. Special thanks to Suzanne Stiverson and Robin McMillan for managing the show. I thank everyone in advance for the Guild support needed to pull off a project as big as the show.

The summer bee is coming. I look forward to seeing many of you there. Please attend if you can. It is an easygoing event and nice way to catch up over the summer. Even if you don't have a transportable project to bring, it's OK to stop and say hi! It is the same second Monday of August, August 11. We plan to open the doors at 4:00 and stay until we want to stop, probably around 8:00. Please bring your own snacks and beverage if you are going to be hungry.

Huge thanks to the incoming Officers and Committee Chairs. I believe Kelly is posting the new list so you can easily find a Chairperson if you need to reach them. Some Chairpersons don't want all their personal contact info on the newsletter blog so remember to check the membership roster if information is missing.

Remember, the September workshop with BJ Titus is coming. I know, it's hard to think about September at this point in the summer, but I do want to fill the event so we can self-support it financially. If you plan to attend, please register with me. At some point I may have to open it to the outside. I want to make sure all the Guild members who want to attend are signed up before I do that. Please let me know.

Happy Quilting!
Leslie

2014-2015 Programs
We have new programs and old favorites to look forward to this year. Our speakers will inspire us with
applique, art quilting, quilt embellishments, EQ 7 techniques, and quilting with new materials.

Join us for our Annual Bee on August 11. Meet at the church at 4. Bring your own dinner/snack. Bring
handwork to keep you busy while we catch up. Here’s an opportunity to get your quilting friends’
expert advice on how to finish your beautiful projects.

In September, we will feature a workshop with B.J. Titus, Cosmic Posies. http://www.bjtitus.com/
($40 for guild members) Time and date: 11 am to 5 pm on guild meeting day, Sept 8, at the church.
Please email leslieobriensk8@comcast.net/ if you’d like to join us.
Our September meeting will feature BJ Titus, an art quilter and applique artist. Check out her website
for inspiration http://www.bjtitus.com/

In October, Teresa Fusco will be with us, accompanied by many, many quilts, for her program, “A
Quilter’s Journey – 50 and Older – Better than Ever.” Look for her updated website later this summer.
http://teresasquiltstudio.com/ (October 13)

Fiber Artist Cheryl Lynch will be with us in November with “Sensational Silks.” She is pleased to be
invited back. Her 2009 visit was at the beginning of her quilt journey, she said, and she has much to
share with us. http://www.cheryllynchquilts.com (November 10)

After you complete your 18-in square mini-quilt for the Quilt Show Raffle, start thinking about your
12 ½-in block for our December Block Exchange. We’ll be making a small gift for you for your sewing
room in December, too. (December 8)

Looking ahead to 2015, guild programming will feature Janneken Smucker, a quilt scholar new to guilds
in our area and our very own quilt book author, Bob DeCarli.

Check our website through the summer for updates on programs for the coming year.

Check out the new Penn Oaks Quilters website!
The new Penn Oaks website is now on-line.  Please take a look and let me know if you encounter any issues.  It has a lot of pictures and graphics.  If you have a slow internet connection, pulling up the site may take you some time.  If it does, I would like to hear from you!

A big "Thank You" to everyone who takes to time to review the site.  As special incentive to do so - the 2014-2015 programs are listed on the site  (Thank You! Suzanne Doonan).  And see if you can find yourself featured there!

As always, if you have materials or pictures you think is news-worthy for the public website, please contact me.  I will be glad to post the items.

Quilt Show 2015

We recently had a quilt show meeting and here is the overview.

Entry form, vendor form and advertisement/door prize donation forms are ready.
Website is updated with newest information on the Quilt Show.  Maureen will be putting the Vendor and door prize list.  Ellen will provide the whole quilt entry form and rules on the website.

Props are being gathered.  Pat Smith and Helen Hofbauer will let us know when we can provide items for the Acorn Shoppe.  They will organize any workshops.

Robin McMillen is getting her food handler’s license and will lead the food committee.  We will need commitment tending the food area if we go this way.  We have tried to get a caterer who will self-fund and supply everything and take the profit (with some cut for the Guild).  No luck so far concerning the latter.

Raffle mini-quilts will be 18”X18”.  PLEASE START WORKING ON YOUR QUILT AS THEY WERE TERRIFIC FOR PUBLICITY OVER THE YEAR.  TURN THEM IN AS SOON AS THEY ARE DONE.  WE ARE ASKING EACH MEMBER TO

Cindy Vognetz and Jean Zubert are re-looking at receiving and returning quilts process.

Next Meeting is still on a Sunday—Sunday, September 21.  Place to be determined.

June 2014 Newsletter

Hi Quilters,

I am shocked that my two year terms as president of Penn Oaks is coming to a close.  I had a wonderful time as president.  I am not an innovative thinker, I am more a planner / organizer.  So the only real goal I had for my presidency was to create a more productive and efficient meeting routine.  I really feel that the meetings are not only productive and efficient but they also have the energy and laughs that truly reflect our shared passion for quilting.  Speaking of Energy, I am super excited to see the direction the guild is heading.  We have new members taking on leadership roles.  And looking forward to next year, we have the quilt show so start working on those quilts.  Those quilt ribbons could go home with you next May.

I want to thank all my PO Board members and Committee heads for keeping all the guild activities rolling smoothly.  I feel that everyone did a wonderful Job.  I want to thank the following quilters for contributing to my two years as President.

Leslie O'Brien  - Programs, Publicity
Chris Harkins - Programs
Pat Sherman - Recording Secretary
Ellen McMillen - Treasurer, Membership and Getaway
Rikki Newlander - Corresponding Secretary
Denise Blake - Treasurer, Silent Auction
Jean Fox - Membership, Parliamentarian, African Dress Leader
Rob Lodi - Membership
Pat Smith - Membership
Suzanne Stiverson - Quilt Show Chair
Kelly Meanix - Newsletter, Challenge
Maureen Carlson - Website, Round Robin
Kathy DeCarli - Getaway
Rita Marie Smith - Patches of Love
Angel Henderson - Hospitality
Delores Holzwarth - Soldier Quilts, Newsletter Communication
Maryann Lewis - Silent Auction
Carolyn Davis - Challenge
Jamie Loncaric - Challenge
Suzanne Simmons - Challenge
Jan Brown - Mystery Box
Sara Borr - Historian

Wow, it takes many hands to run the guild. I apologize if I missed anyone on the list.   I want to thank all of you.  I am going to miss my job as president, but I think the quilt show will keep my busy ;).  I look forward to seeing you all at the June Meeting.

Happy Quilting,
Robin McMillen

PROGRAMS -Leslie O'Brien

Summer is here! Other than the random hail storm, I think we are out of the snowy woods. Weather is getting warmer and the brighter days are bound to influence our projects. Lisa O'Neill will be here in June to help get those creative ideas going. Her "slivers" quilts are bound to inspire. Her website is  http://www.athreadfromtheedge.com/ ; if you want to see examples of her work. We are happy to have her and appreciate her willingness to speak with short notice. Please keep the prayers and warm thoughts going to BJ Titus.

It has been a pleasure working on Programs for the last two years. I enjoyed getting to know Susan and Suzanne, as well as the many speakers who have come our way. Programs is a great way to get more involved in the quilting community. I welcome Suzanne Doonan as the next Programs Chair and Betsy Moses as her understudy. Suzanne has already planned much of next year and I think we are in for a great 2014-2015. Did I really just write 2014-2015! Time is going way too fast. Better get quilting so we can keep up with it!

Happy Summer and we hope to see everyone at summer events and shows.
The Programs Committee,
Leslie, Suzanne, Betsy, and Susan

PS - More news. BJ Titus was in touch today (May 28) and we are going to hold the previously planned June workshop and lecture the day of the September meeting. Everything we planned for June will apply in September. I will update the form and have Kelly forward it to everyone. Please come to the June meeting ready to sign up for the September workshop if you want to attend.

I am pleased to let you know that BJ Titus has rescheduled both the workshop and the lecture with us for the day of our Sept workshop, Monday, Sept, 8, 2014.

I have attached the workshop form. The project is pictured on the form. The fee listed is the only fee. $40 Penn Oaks Quilt Guild members and $45 for non-members. No kit fee. You bring all your own materials. She will have some items to sell if you are interested. I will respond with the materials list when I hear from you.

Please reply as soon as you can. I had an excellent response to the previously scheduled workshop and I expect this to fill up fast.

Please reply if you have any questions or call me Leslie O'Brien 610-269-5465.

MARIAN'S COOKIE RECIPE
SWEDISH OATMEAL COOKIES
From “Key Lime Pie Murder” by Joanne Fluke  p. 13

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F., rack in middle position

1 cup butter (2 sticks, ½ lb.)
¾ cup white sugar
1 tsp. Baking soda
1 cup flour (no need to sift)
2 cups oatmeal (Quaker Oats—Quick)
1 egg yolk

Melt the butter in a microwave safe bowl on HIGH for approximately 1 ½ minutes.
Let it cool to room temperature.  Mix in the white sugar.  Add the baking soda, flour, and oatmeal.  Stir thoroughly.  Beat in the egg yolk with a fork until it is thoroughly mixed.
Add it to the bowl and stir until it is incorporated.

Grease (or spray with Pam or other nonstick cooking spray) a standard-sized cookie sheet.  Make small balls of dough and place them on the cookie sheet, 12 to a sheet.  Press them down with a fork in a crisscross pattern the way you’d do for peanut butter cookies.

Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes or until they are just starting to brown around the edges.  Let the cookies cool for a minute or two on the sheets and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Yield: approximately 5 dozen, depending on the cookie size.

NOTE:  Be sure to use Quick Oats.  They absorb butter better.

MEMBERSHIP: Jean Fox/Ellen McMillenForty-two members and four guests attended the May meeting. The door prize was won by Leslie O'Brien.
Membership renewal for the 2014-15 guild year will continue at the June meeting. The renewal form will be sent as an attachment in a separate email. It is easier to print it that way.
Please bring your membership forms and checks to the meeting.

2015 “For the Love of Quilting VIII” POQ Quilt Show

The Quilt Show Committee met 4/16.

Highlights of the meeting follow:
We will be limiting raffle baskets to ten (10) so that we have more space.  We need a Raffle basket “deliverer” for after the show.

Entry form, vendor form and advertisement/door prize donation forms are ready.

We will need a food committee because we will not seek another caterer.  Need a licensed Food Handler and a Committee head.  Please let Robin McMillen or Suzanne Stiverson know if you have a license or would like to lead this committee.  Reasoning—we can make $$ off the food.

Raffle mini-quilts will be 18”X18”.  PLEASE START WORKING ON YOUR QUILT AS THEY WERE TERRIFIC FOR PUBLICITY OVER THE YEAR.  TURN THEM IN AS SOON AS THEY ARE DONE.  WE ARE ASKING EACH MEMBER TO
DONATE AT LEAST ONE MINI-QUILT TO RAFFLE.

Next meeting will be Sunday, June 9 at Robin McMillen’s home at 2pm.

Coming In September------A Fabric Swap

Penn Oaks Fabric Swap starting in September! This is a great way to build up your stash with some new fabrics.

We have 20 member signed up so far. I will have the sign-up sheet at the June meeting and then the swap will be closed. This will give everyone time to get their squares cut and ready for the September meeting.

This is a 1 year commitment so please keep that in mind. The swap will run September 2014 through June 2015. If you are absent from a guild meeting you can mail them to me, drop them off at my house or I could pick them up from you.

Depending on the number of participants you are to cut out that many 10" squares from 1 fabric. For example if there are 15 people participating you would cut out (15) 10 inch squares from 1 fabric.

Stack them up and bring them to the guild meeting each month in a large ziplock bag with a paper or index card inside that has your name on it and give them to me. I will take them home and divide them up and bring them to the next meeting at which time you will bring the next set of blocks. You will go home with a nice new set of different fabrics each month!

We will have a theme for each month, either a color or a pattern (I am open to suggestions). The only stipulation is that it is current fabric, no older than 2 years old, not old stuff you are trying to get rid of. If you don't want it no one else does either! Depending on the amount of people who want to participate it may involve having to buy fabric.

If this is something that has interest we can do some different sizes.....2 1/2" strips, charm squares, fat eighths, etc. down the road. If you have any questions email me.......Kellymx@aol.com. Once we have a list I will email the participants with our choices for the entire year. The more that participate the more fabrics you will have for your stash!
Kelly

SILENT AUCTION

Our silent auction will be in June.  There are many great fabrics, books, magazines, etc. for everyone to look through and bid on.  You can still bring in any items you want to donate.
