President's Letter

Our August Bee is right around the corner.  For those of you who have never attended our summer bee, it is a fun casual evening.  We begin at 4:00, come whenever you can and stay as long as you wish.  We usually last until about 8:00.  Bring something to work on if you'd like, bring a snack or dinner with you as well.  It is a nice time to get to talk to other members more than we usually have time for at a regular meeting.

The guild seems to be quiet over the summer months but there has been a lot of work being done behind the scenes.  Rita Marie Smith, our Programs Chairperson, and her mentor, Linda Kerschner, are putting together a fabulous lineup of programs for the coming year.  I'm very excited about what we have to look forward to.  I have asked a small group of members to review our by-laws and they will begin work on that soon.  When they have a final copy of changes recommended for the by-laws, the membership will be asked to review and approve them by vote.  Another group of members is working hard researching options for the site of our next quilt show.  New officers are in their positions and learning their jobs and a budget will be created for the coming year.

The summer bee will be at Frazer Mennonite Church, Monday, August 14, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m.  This is an informal evening so bring your dinner or a snack, a beverage, a project to work on and sit and chat ! !

Member Profile - Linda Kerschner

How many years ago did you start quilting?

I’ve always admired quilts but didn’t think I could be precise enough with my sewing to be successful. When I retired five years ago, I dipped my foot into the quilting waters, and two years ago bought a serious sewing machine. Now I’m addicted.

What is your favorite part of the quilting process?

My favorite part of the quilting process is the part I’m doing at the moment. I like planning because of the infinite possibilities, I like cutting to see how the fabric changes as it is framed in its new shapes, I like sewing the shapes together to see the relationships develop, I like machine quilting smaller projects to add another layer to the design, and I like binding because I know the project is almost ready to give to someone special.

What is your favorite color?

Blue

How many quilts do you think you have made?

I’ve finished over 50 quilts.

What is your next project?

I’m working on a queen-sized quilt for my best friend. She picked out the fabric (neutral batiks), and we researched the pattern together. It’s the first time I’ve tackled a project this large. And I have a Lorax quilt kit sitting on the cutting table to make for my son’s birthday in September.

Tell us something the members may want to know about yourself.

I love to cook and bake, especially cookies at Christmas and pizza any time. This passion and my family’s traditions led me to write a series of children’s books about pizza, pasta, and pizzelles.

Summer Fun

What is the Teal Mini Swap? 

Teal Mini Swap, formerly known as Two for Teal Mug Rug Swap and OCRF fundraiser, is a way for EvaPaige Quilt Designs to help raise awareness of this ridiculous disease annually during the months of July through September, which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The basic premise is formulated around the What We Know of All Quilters and Sewists Trifecta:

• They love to sew
• They like fun gifts in the mail
• They are mostly women and/or have women in their lives and would like to prevent women from dying from ovarian cancer if at all possible.

Participants are asked to pay a nominal fee when registering; registration starts the third week of July each year and if THIS LINK is live, it means registration is open and it will lead you right to it. They are then sent the name of their swap partner along with a small piece of that year's focus fabric, to be used somewhere in the mini quilt they are to make for their partner. All minis are to be sent to partners by by 9/30 of the swap year.

Participants can choose to make either a mug rug (up to 10" square) or a mini quilt (up to 18" square). Partners will be matched according to their preference, ie, if you request a mug rug, you'll be matched with someone who also is requesting a mug rug. Same for minis. Just be sure to check the appropriate box on the registration!
