June 2014 Newsletter

Hi Quilters,

I am shocked that my two year terms as president of Penn Oaks is coming to a close.  I had a wonderful time as president.  I am not an innovative thinker, I am more a planner / organizer.  So the only real goal I had for my presidency was to create a more productive and efficient meeting routine.  I really feel that the meetings are not only productive and efficient but they also have the energy and laughs that truly reflect our shared passion for quilting.  Speaking of Energy, I am super excited to see the direction the guild is heading.  We have new members taking on leadership roles.  And looking forward to next year, we have the quilt show so start working on those quilts.  Those quilt ribbons could go home with you next May.

I want to thank all my PO Board members and Committee heads for keeping all the guild activities rolling smoothly.  I feel that everyone did a wonderful Job.  I want to thank the following quilters for contributing to my two years as President.

Leslie O'Brien  - Programs, Publicity
Chris Harkins - Programs
Pat Sherman - Recording Secretary
Ellen McMillen - Treasurer, Membership and Getaway
Rikki Newlander - Corresponding Secretary
Denise Blake - Treasurer, Silent Auction
Jean Fox - Membership, Parliamentarian, African Dress Leader
Rob Lodi - Membership
Pat Smith - Membership
Suzanne Stiverson - Quilt Show Chair
Kelly Meanix - Newsletter, Challenge
Maureen Carlson - Website, Round Robin
Kathy DeCarli - Getaway
Rita Marie Smith - Patches of Love
Angel Henderson - Hospitality
Delores Holzwarth - Soldier Quilts, Newsletter Communication
Maryann Lewis - Silent Auction
Carolyn Davis - Challenge
Jamie Loncaric - Challenge
Suzanne Simmons - Challenge
Jan Brown - Mystery Box
Sara Borr - Historian

Wow, it takes many hands to run the guild. I apologize if I missed anyone on the list.   I want to thank all of you.  I am going to miss my job as president, but I think the quilt show will keep my busy ;).  I look forward to seeing you all at the June Meeting.

Happy Quilting,
Robin McMillen

PROGRAMS -Leslie O'Brien

Summer is here! Other than the random hail storm, I think we are out of the snowy woods. Weather is getting warmer and the brighter days are bound to influence our projects. Lisa O'Neill will be here in June to help get those creative ideas going. Her "slivers" quilts are bound to inspire. Her website is  http://www.athreadfromtheedge.com/ ; if you want to see examples of her work. We are happy to have her and appreciate her willingness to speak with short notice. Please keep the prayers and warm thoughts going to BJ Titus.

It has been a pleasure working on Programs for the last two years. I enjoyed getting to know Susan and Suzanne, as well as the many speakers who have come our way. Programs is a great way to get more involved in the quilting community. I welcome Suzanne Doonan as the next Programs Chair and Betsy Moses as her understudy. Suzanne has already planned much of next year and I think we are in for a great 2014-2015. Did I really just write 2014-2015! Time is going way too fast. Better get quilting so we can keep up with it!

Happy Summer and we hope to see everyone at summer events and shows.
The Programs Committee,
Leslie, Suzanne, Betsy, and Susan

You bring all your own materials. She will have some items to sell if you are interested. I will respond with the materials list when I hear from you.

MARIAN'S COOKIE RECIPE
SWEDISH OATMEAL COOKIES
From “Key Lime Pie Murder” by Joanne Fluke  p. 13

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F., rack in middle position

1 cup butter (2 sticks, ½ lb.)
¾ cup white sugar
1 tsp. Baking soda
1 cup flour (no need to sift)
2 cups oatmeal (Quaker Oats—Quick)
1 egg yolk

Melt the butter in a microwave safe bowl on HIGH for approximately 1 ½ minutes.
Let it cool to room temperature.  Mix in the white sugar.  Add the baking soda, flour, and oatmeal.  Stir thoroughly.  Beat in the egg yolk with a fork until it is thoroughly mixed.
Add it to the bowl and stir until it is incorporated.

Grease (or spray with Pam or other nonstick cooking spray) a standard-sized cookie sheet.  Make small balls of dough and place them on the cookie sheet, 12 to a sheet.  Press them down with a fork in a crisscross pattern the way you’d do for peanut butter cookies.

Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes or until they are just starting to brown around the edges.  Let the cookies cool for a minute or two on the sheets and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Yield: approximately 5 dozen, depending on the cookie size.

NOTE:  Be sure to use Quick Oats.  They absorb butter better.

2015 “For the Love of Quilting VIII” POQ Quilt Show

The Quilt Show Committee met 4/16.

Highlights of the meeting follow:
We will be limiting raffle baskets to ten (10) so that we have more space.  We need a Raffle basket “deliverer” for after the show.

Entry form, vendor form and advertisement/door prize donation forms are ready.

We will need a food committee because we will not seek another caterer.  Need a licensed Food Handler and a Committee head.  Please let Robin McMillen or Suzanne Stiverson know if you have a license or would like to lead this committee.  Reasoning—we can make $$ off the food.

Raffle mini-quilts will be 18”X18”.  PLEASE START WORKING ON YOUR QUILT AS THEY WERE TERRIFIC FOR PUBLICITY OVER THE YEAR.  TURN THEM IN AS SOON AS THEY ARE DONE.  WE ARE ASKING EACH MEMBER TO
DONATE AT LEAST ONE MINI-QUILT TO RAFFLE.

Next meeting will be Sunday, June 9 at Robin McMillen’s home at 2pm.

Coming In September------A Fabric Swap

Penn Oaks Fabric Swap starting in September! This is a great way to build up your stash with some new fabrics.

We have 20 member signed up so far. I will have the sign-up sheet at the June meeting and then the swap will be closed. This will give everyone time to get their squares cut and ready for the September meeting.

This is a 1 year commitment so please keep that in mind. The swap will run September 2014 through June 2015. If you are absent from a guild meeting you can mail them to me, drop them off at my house or I could pick them up from you.

Depending on the number of participants you are to cut out that many 10" squares from 1 fabric. For example if there are 15 people participating you would cut out (15) 10 inch squares from 1 fabric.

Stack them up and bring them to the guild meeting each month in a large ziplock bag with a paper or index card inside that has your name on it and give them to me. I will take them home and divide them up and bring them to the next meeting at which time you will bring the next set of blocks. You will go home with a nice new set of different fabrics each month!

We will have a theme for each month, either a color or a pattern (I am open to suggestions). The only stipulation is that it is current fabric, no older than 2 years old, not old stuff you are trying to get rid of. If you don't want it no one else does either! Depending on the amount of people who want to participate it may involve having to buy fabric.

If this is something that has interest we can do some different sizes.....2 1/2" strips, charm squares, fat eighths, etc. down the road. If you have any questions email me.......Kellymx@aol.com. Once we have a list I will email the participants with our choices for the entire year. The more that participate the more fabrics you will have for your stash!
Kelly

SILENT AUCTION

Our silent auction will be in June.  There are many great fabrics, books, magazines, etc. for everyone to look through and bid on.  You can still bring in any items you want to donate.

May 2014 Newsletter

President's Letter

Hi Quilters,

I am over my love of bright clear colors - I now have a new favorite.   - Low Volume Fabrics.
I am obsessed.  Kelly Meanix showed me some of her fabrics that she collected via an online fabric swap  Then I fell in love with a scrap quilt that Stephanie Braskey was working on at the getaway that included many low volume fabrics.  As I understand it Low volume fabrics are light fabrics with low contrast that may contain a second color.  The quilts made with low volume fabrics are soft and have an aged feel to them.  I drove out to Berkholders and went a little crazy.  Here is a picture of some of the fabrics I purchased. Not all of them are strictly low volume but I think they go together.  I am so excited to get started on a scrap quilt that features these fabrics.  I am planning on making the same quilt that Stephanie was working on.  It is a based on the Burgoyne Surrounded Block.  I have 4 quilt tops completed that now need quilting.  I want to complete at least 2 of those before I start on this quilt.  It gives me motivation to complete a few projects.  In the meantime - I will content myself with rearranging and touching this soft pile of new fabrics.

Guild news, we will finish up the year with two great meetings and a workshop with BJ Titus.  I am really looking forward to that.  I also want to again, Thank Leslie O'Brien and all the other volunteers who are taking over leadership positions next year in the guild.  Kudos to the Nominating Committee Ellen McMillen, Suzanne Stiverson and Jean Zubert.

See you all at the May Meeting.
Happy Quilting
Robin McMillen

Programs
The Programs Committee has two great meetings in store for you as we wrap up the year. Jackie Gauker, of Jackie's Woolens, will be with us in May to show us her wool work. She has lectured for us before and she is always a welcome face at the Guild. She will have product with her so be prepared to shop!

We have a full day event planned for the June meeting. BJ Titus will hold a fused applique workshop for us during the day and then present her lecture for us in the evening. BJ is a well known local quilter and has won many awards and is widely published. She is known for her bold shapes and colors. Look at her website for a glimpse of her work. www.bjtitus.com. ;

The workshop form will be available soon. I expect the price to be $40 for members and $45 for non-members. I will send it Kelly to distribute soon. I'm not sure which or how many of her patterns she will have available at the workshop.  I will let you know as soon as BJ and I work that out. She shows the hibiscus and pumpkin on her website so you could take a look to get some ideas.

Patches of Love - Rita Marie Smith

We are concluding our charity work for this year by making pillowcases for the pediatric unit at Penn State Hershey.  They are so easy to make....we are following the "hot dog"  pattern.   If you are not familiar with that method, just google "hot dog pillowcase" and there are directions and a video or see me at our May meeting for directions.  Pillowcases can be given to me only at the May and June guild meetings.    Thank you again for all the wonderful dresses, bibs and blankets for Africa and the pillowcases for PSH  this year as well as the gift of time out of your busy schedules.

The country where they are is Zambia and the name of the orphanage is Namwianga located near the town of Livingston.

April 2014 Newsletter

PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Hi Quilters,

We have some great spring activities in the guild lined up.  I hope many of you are working on your "Please Don't Touch the Quilts" challenge quilt.  Mine is already done and it is so cute.  I can't wait to see what creative projects you all come up with.  I also can't believe that it is my final few meetings as president.  The nominating committee is busy at work putting together the slate for next year.  I know they are doing an excellent job and the leadership for next year will be stellar.

I am also happy to say that looking at the pictures of my sewing space in last months newsletter really motivated me to clean it up.  I pushed up my sleeves and sorted through some stuff.  It is a much nicer place to work.  If only I could get myself motivated to finish up some UFOs.  I don't know about you but I think at last count I have 6 quilts in some stage of progress and I only want to start more.  I wonder how many total UFOs are outstanding in the guild?  It's a safe bet that it is a pretty significant number.

The challenge is only going to be great if you all make some quilts so my hope is that you will read the guild newsletter and then rush off to make a sign.  I think the signs would really add some humor and interest to the quilt show.  I am looking forward to seeing all your entries.

Happy Quilting

Greetings from the Programs Team

We can't wait to see the challenge quilts in April. I'm sure everyone is hard at work on their projects that will serve as "don't touch" signs at the show. After the challenge is judged and awarded, Jan Brown from the Quilt Block will show us what is new in the quilting world this spring. April will be two programs in one since we missed Jan's talk in February due to the snow. Don't forget to bring some challenge projects of challenges past to show and tell. It will be fun to see what still have in our collections and what challenged us years ago.

In May we will welcome Jackie Gauker from Jackie's Woolens. Jackie always gives an inspiring lecture and comes with plenty of goodies from the shop for us to buy.

June is the last formal meeting of the year. BJ Titus will be here to talk about her quilting inspirations and technique. BJ has been back in touch and is willing to do a workshop for us. It looks like we have enough interest so I am working on pulling the workshop together maybe in June before we all leave on summer vacations. I hope to talk about it at the April meeting.

The Programs Team,
Leslie and Suzanne

CHALLENGE
Please don't touch the quilts Challenge.
Please remember these little quilts are to stand in place of the printed signs. We are shooting for 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Yours could be smaller, but do not make them larger than 9 by 12 inches. We are not going to be frantic about it, but size is part of the challenge. Larger ones could be an issue at the quilt show (but I have an idea about that).

We are looking forward to seeing your quilts!

Coming In September------A Fabric Swap

Penn Oaks Fabric Swap starting in September! This is a great way to build up your stash with some new fabrics.

Members can sign up now through August. I will have a signup sheet at the next 3 meetings or you can email me over the summer.

You will go home with a nice new set of different fabrics!

We will have a theme for each month, either a color or a pattern (I am open to suggestions). The only stipulation is that it is current fabric, not old stuff you are trying to get rid of. If you don't want it no one else does either! Depending on the amount of people who want to participate it may involve having to buy fabric.

If this is something that has interest we can do some different sizes.....2 1/2" stips, charm squares, fat eighths, etc. down the road. If you have any questions email me  ..Kellymx@aol.com. Once we have a list I will email the participants with our choices for the entire year. The more that participate the more fabrics you will have for your stash!
