Due by May Guild Meeting

The purpose of the Penn Oaks Outstanding Volunteer Award is to recognize one Penn Oaks member per year that went the extra mile to promote the guild and facilitate guild activities. To be eligible, a guild member must nominate the candidate by the May general meeting of the guild calendar. Board members vote on the submissions and the Award is presented at the June meeting. Board members are not eligible. Below is a sample of the nomination form.

February Newsletter 2013

Hi Quilters.

Arghhh January! I hate that month. I have nothing good to say about it. I always put off unpleasant tasks until after the holidays. So they all pile up and I can't avoid them anymore. I call it Project Paralysis. My latest bout of Project Paralysis involves the quilt for my Dad's next book. I looked at the plans in the fall - and I have to admit I found them daunting. But... I put it in a bag in the corner of my sewing room and told myself "I can't deal with that today - I will worry about that in January" Well, it is January (now February) and time to pay the piper.

I was walking around with the feeling of dread all month that I could not name. When I finally tackled that quilt, called Kathy's Star, I felt a huge relief. That was the knot in my stomach I had been carrying since January 1. I am making a block first to check the measurements and it is not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. In fact, it is going well. That bag in the corner of my sewing room (that I even avoided looking at) is open and it is not nearly the dragon I anticipated. I hope you all tackle your project paralysis with the same success. My goal is to have the top put together before the getaway. Ambitious - yes it is. But I like to achieve.

I am looking forward to the getaway. Have a happy valentines day and stay warm and safe. Stay Calm, Carry on and Keep Quilting!

Jan and Cynthia of The Quilt Block will be with us to demonstrate the latest tools and rulers to help you finish those borders and bindings.

They will also discuss battings on the market today.

March –Lisa Calle – Divide and Design

Long arm machine quilter extraordinaire will show us how to approach the quilting design process in a whole new way. She will also talk on how to prepare your top for your long arm machine quilter and how to block your quilted top.

This promises to be a great lecture from a great quilter!

April - Challenge and More New Members

Join us as we view the Challenge quilts for 2013.

Time will be set aside to finalize any Quilt Show loose ends.

We will also have our new members and their mentors introduce themselves.

QUILT SHOW—Gotta be stitching by now—3 months to go!!!!!

Remember our next quilt show is Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, 2013.

We now have twelve vendor spaces filled and we are DONE. Here they are: newest is The Quilt Block plus B&K’s Country Crafts and Quilts (2); Diane Phalen Watercolors; Handmaiden Designs; Happy Valley Quilting; J. Illiano Designs; Jackie’s Woolens; Pottstown Sewing (3); and Timberline Patchwork. YEAH!!!!! Check out the list on the our website www.pennoaksquilters.org plus the list of current door prizes.

Our February Quilt Show meeting will be held at the Getaway—in the lounge (remember Clue)—at 9:30 a.m. So far Robin, Pat Smith, Leslie, Ellen, Kelly, Maureen, Marti, Myrna and Pat Sherman have replied. Just let me know. Please bring updates, questions and issues to the meeting. I’ll be there and my trusty leader, Robin will be too..

Chris Harkins will manage the raffles for the GO!Baby with die, Baby Lock B9 sewing machine from Hayes (which I now have), new knitting machine from Marti and possibly another machine from Baby Lock. We have a lot to tell our potential visiting guilds about.

What we need from all of you is to go through your tools, books, patterns and fabrics to help out with Jean’s baskets and the Acorn Shop. We start putting baskets together in April, so to help manage the process, your early contributions are really appreciated by Jean and her team.

Sara Borr is requesting rick rack, lace, buttons, trims, etc. to make packets to sell at the shop. As you do your Fall/Winter quilt room cleaning, remember to collect your gently used or new (great intentions) patterns for Sara. They sold very well last time. If you know you’ll never make it, the guild will get the return. Also if you have some great ideas or want to host a small workshop to make that idea, please contact Sara. We have a pattern for festive table napkins. She will be sending it out through Kelly. We also will be making Kindle/Nook/Ipad covers. We will be making sachets and many items are coming from Marti’s workshops. More to come about future workshops.

Jean Fox indicated she doesn’t need any more baskets. Thanks to those who donated. If you have gently used tools, new patterns, more current gently used books or extra fat quarters, she could use them, too. She could also use yardage of recent fabrics (not 1980’s or 90’s); fat quarters and any other cloth items like charm packs you know you won’t use.

Kelly Meanix is chairing a small quilt raffle where each member will be asked to make a 16” x 24” (finished) quilt that we will raffle at the show. She gave information at our June meeting so please contact her for more information or clarification. Of course 100% participation would be terrific! The quilts will be due the end of March so she can have time to take pictures for the raffle “bags”.

Also, registration for helpers started at our January 2013 meeting and will go on until full. There will be one overall sheet with all positions to pass for you to mark the times on the day(s) you can work. As the rules say “POQ members not working at the Quilt Show and Non-POQ members will pay Quilt Show entry of $8 even if their quilts are displayed.”

A quilt show takes everyone in the guild to be successful. Your contributions help fund our charitable giving and programs. We need your time as much as we need your items. Thanks for everyone’s contributions so far.

THANKS!!!!

Thank you for all the cards, caring calls and prayers. Chemo is a rough road to haul. With three more weeks that end 2/18, I’m ready for a break. I’m going to the getaway, but may nap some. My surgery is March 12 at Fox Chase.

I also thank everyone who has brought me and plan to bring Jack and me meals. It is truly humbling and we are so grateful. As I am pretty worthless—when I do go out, it is a one-shot moment and back to bed—so this help takes such a load off Jack’s shoulders.

Do know your thoughts, calls and prayers really do lift my spirit.

With all this cold weather it is the ideal time to work on something for the Acorn

Shoppe. I hope most members will have something for the shoppe. Remember that the items do not have to be quilted. We sell all kinds of projects, knit, crochet, jewelry, etc. Also go through your quilt books and patterns. You know those that you just had to have but somehow never made. Any profit the shoppe makes goes for programs at our meetings and we have had great one and would like to continue to have them.

As many of you know, instead of participating in Quilts for Kids this year, we are making pillowcases. If you don't have a favorite pattern, I'd be glad to provide you with a copy of an easy one at a Guild meeting (same one demonstrated at the January meeting.) The Penn State Hershey pediatric unit will be the recipient this year. They are asking for help in providing their many young patients with pillowcases. Bright, cheery, fun fabric would be most appropriate for the hundreds of children they care for. If you are aware of another local hospital or hospice in need, please let me know and we could focus on them next year. We are purchasing or using our own fabric for the pillowcases. Hi Quilters

Looking ahead in 2013 - We have some great quilting activities coming up including the Getaway and The quilt show. I can hardly wait for the Getaway in February. Many of us look forward to it all year long. I have had no time to quilt in December so some uninterrupted quilting time is really something to look forward too.

Also it is time to start signing up to help with the quilt show. More detailed information will follow shortly. I also hope you are working on those quilts. The quilts in the 2010 show were awesome so we have a lot to live up too.

Remember to Keep calm, carry on and keep quilting.

Holiday Greetings from the Programs Committee!

It's 2013 and time to get back into the swing of things at our January meeting.

We are going to continue our program journey of helping you create some wonderful quilts.

Our January meeting features the guild members and Books, Books, Books!

Many of us signed up to present our favorite and most inspirational quilting books. We really are a talented group!!!

We will hear about the books that brought out the creativity in all of us and see the quilts and projects inspired by the books.

We will also have a demonstration from Rita Marie Smith and Rikki Newlander on the Charity Pillow cases that we will be making.

Speaking of charities, you quilters are awesome! We will have sent out over 30 blankets to the Project Linus Hurricane Sandy project.

Thank you very much! If you still want to donate your adult fleece blanket, we will collect them at the January meeting.

In February we will hear from Jan and Cynthia, owners of the Exton quilt shop, The Quilt Block.

They will present the latest and greatest in quilting tools and gadgets focusing on Borders, Batts and Bindings.

This is a must meeting as we get our quilts ready for the Quilt Show.I

CHALLENGE

Suzanne Simmons will have challenge fabric at the meeting for anyone who did not get it yet.
Our theme this year is "Where I Live" which is open to broad interpretation! Where you do live, where you would like to live etc. anything goes as long as it is quilted and bound.

Quilt size is 24 x 24.  Due at the April meeting.

Because of the Chemo and upcoming surgery, I’m stepping aside from the leadership role of our Quilt show. I will work behind the scenes to help out, but Chemo is taking its toll. What we need from all of you is to go through your tools, books, patterns and fabrics to help out with Jean’s baskets and the Acorn Shop. December 2012 Newsletter

Hi Quilters,

I don't know about you but I already can't catch my breath with the hustle and bustle of the holidays. I just wanted to take this time to explain the Outstanding Volunteer Award we are introducing to the guild. The purpose of this award is to provide some recognition for a guild member who works diligently and above and beyond in furthering the goals of the guild. I will post the nominating forms soon on the blog. You as members will have the opportunity to nominate someone you think is deserving. Nominations are due by the May meeting. The members of the board will then vote on the one most deserving and the award will be presented at the June Meeting. Board members are not eligible because we do the voting ;).

I want to also wish you all a Happy Holiday Season. I won't be at the December meeting (taking a vacation for my husband's birthday) but Chris Harkins and Leslie O'Brien have a great meeting planned. I will see you all in January. Remember to keep working on those quilts for the show. Also, when the holiday stress makes you crazy, keep calm, carry on and eat a cookie (or two or a dozen).

PROGRAMS - CHRIS HARKINS

December - Holiday Party Plans
Get ready to take some time away from your busy holiday schedule, socialize and make a gift that will really be appreciated!!!

We will be making polar fleece blankets for Hurricane Sandy victims.

Please bring a 1 1/2 - 2 yard piece of colorful, cheerful, patterned fleece and thread to whip stitch or blanket stitch the edge and sewing supplies. Please cut off the selvages before stitching. Blankets are single layer only. The fringe style blankets do not work for this project. Blankets may be for adults or children, but since the group receives more blankets for children than adults, please consider making a blanket for an adult. At the meeting, two quilters can actually work on one blanket at the same time and meet your stitching in the middle.

This project is sponsored by the Linus project. Please see Blankiedepot.org for all the information about where our blankets will be going.

***We will also hold the traditional holiday block exchange. If you want to participate, bring a wrapped 12 1/2 X 12 1/2 holiday block. For every block you bring, you get a block to take home. It is a wonderful way to have a unique holiday quilt.

***The hospitality group will announce plans for refreshments.

January - Books, Books, Books...

Share one of your favorite books with the guild.

With so many books on the market today, it is hard to keep up.

Share with us a favorite book that has impacted your work. It can be a classic that inspires design ideas, one that has the best instructional or how-to lessons, one that has led you on a new quilting path or one that has taken you back to our quilting history. Design, color, traditional or contemporary...tell us why you like it and how it influenced your work. Show us some of your creations from the book. It could be hard to choose just one book!!!

Please sign up at the December meeting so we know we have enough participation.

It will also help us plan the meeting.

Our Quilt Show Committee met in November. What a great bunch of worker bees. Everyone has great ideas and great workers to bring them through to fruition. Good news: Griffith Hall has been renovated—Terrific. I think that will really make our show shine even more.

Kelly Meanix is chairing a small quilt raffle where each member will be asked to make a 16” x 24” (finished) quilt that we will raffle at the show. She gave information at our June meeting so please contact her for more information or clarification. Of course 100% participation would be terrific! The quilts will be due the end of March so she can have time to take pictures for the raffle “bags”.

Also, registration for helpers will start at our January 2013 meeting. There will be one overall sheet with all positions to pass for you to mark the times on the day(s) you can work. As the rules say “POQ members not working at the Quilt Show and Non-POQ members will pay Quilt Show entry of $8 even if their quilts are displayed.”

A quilt show takes everyone in the guild to be successful. Your contributions help fund our charitable giving and programs. We need your time as much as we need your items.

2013 Quilt Show

MYSTERY BOX - STEPHANIE BRASKEY

We will again have the Mystery Box at the December meeting. The Mystery Box is a fund-raiser for the guild. Chances are $1 or 6 for $5 and the prize is worth $20 or more. Last month's prize was the just-released book, Skip The Borders, and the new Wonder Clips for holding your binding in place while sewing, a total value of $35. November 2012 Newsletter

November President's Note

I am watching Sandy blow my trees around in the back yard as I write this note. Yikes, not so fun. I hope this note finds you all safe and dry. I can not believe it is already November. I want to take this opportunity to briefly encourage you all to get to work on Quilts for the Quilt Show in May. I recently challenged myself with curved piecing and I am almost done the top of a Pickle Dish Quilt. It was rewarding to challenge myself. I would like to suggest that you do the same. If you have never done a Y seam before give it a try. If you love the look of hand applique but have never tried it yourself, than start a small hand applique project. What is the worst thing that can happen? It does not work. Oh well, we all have projects like that. Remember, we only have 7 months to the quilt show. I know that Suzanne and her team are doing an excellent job with organization and vendors but we all know what makes a quilt show great. Great Quilts! Get to work.

Jamie Loncaric QUILT SHOW - SUZANNE STIVERSON QUILT SHOW—Not too early to start stitching—6 months to go!!!!! Remember our next quilt show is Friday and Saturday, May 3-4, 2013. Now we have enough vendors to carry the majority of the venue expenses, we need every one of you to pitch in by asking your favorite stores (not quilt related), your salon and others to donate gift cards, small items, etc. for our Raffle baskets and our door prizes. Just make sure I get the gift and the name & business to credit them on our website. We are already covering all the quilt stores around our area. The best thing you could also do is hype up the show at your church, Bible studies and other gatherings. Get your friends to come. Attendance is our best way to bring the dollars for our programs and charity giving. If each member brought 7 friends to the show, without any other people coming, we would bring in over $3000. And that is not counting the raffle tickets and items at our Acorn Shop that would be bought by many of the attendees. So start passing the word along. Don’t forget, we also need the items listed below. It’s never too early to bring items to Jean Fox and Sara Borr. Thanks to Maureen for learning all the new stuff needed to keep the website up. Also, she’s been updating all the vendors and donations regularly for me. We now have eight (8) vendors and eleven (11) spaces out of twelve—Pottstown Sewing, Jackie’s Woolens, Timberline Patchwork, Handmaiden Designs, Happy Valley Quilting, Diane Phalen, J. Illiano Designs and B&K Country Crafts and Quilts. Bob indicated we could have 12 vendors, so we are trying for that number. Helen Hofbauer is still trying to round up some additional vendors and Selena is contacting possible donors for our door prizes and pulling in ads for our Show Brochure. Along with Sulky, who are sending a box of goodies in December, Frank A. Edmunds has sent support gloves and quilters hoop tape, Gutterman has sent thread, Nancy’s Notions has sent a gift certificate and Sauders sent a book, marking pencil and charm pack. Check out the list on the our website www.pennoaksquilters.org. For Acorn Shoppe details, check with Sara Borr.. We also will be collecting rick rack, lace, buttons, trims, etc. to make packets to sell at the shop. As you do your Fall quilt room cleaning, remember to collect your gently used or new (great intentions) patterns for Sara. They sold very well last time. If you know you’ll never make it, the guild will get the return. Also if you have some great ideas or want to host a small workshop to make that idea, please contact Sara. Also if you would like to donate a theme basket (Kitchen, Coffee/tea, chocolate, etc.) for our basket raffle, please let Jean Fox know. Jean also needs larger baskets to fill. Please let Jean know if you do and you coordinate at a meeting for delivery. If you have gently used tools, new patterns, more current gently used books or extra fat quarters, she could use them, too. She could also use yardage of recent fabrics (not 1980’s or 90’s); fat quarters and any other cloth items like charm packs you know you won’t use. Suzanne  16 x 24 RAFFLE QUILTS Please remember we are looking for each member to make a 16 x 24 inch quilt to be used to raffle off at our quilt show this coming spring. We will not be making our traditional bed size raffle quilt so this is something we need everyone to contribute with in order to fund our programs. This is open to broad  interpretation.......you can be in a birdhouse, it can be a beach house  you have always wanted, a tree house, a mansion, a castle etc....use  your imagination anything goes. We will be handing out a fabric you must use in the quilt. There will  be limited quantities that we will have at the November meeting. Don't  wait! The size of the quilt is 24 x 24 and is due at the April meeting. It must  be quilted and finished, any techniques can be used. These will also be  hung at our Quilt Show in May.  Questions? Bright, cheery fabrics as  well as seasonal fabrics of ourown choosing would be used.  A pattern, if needed, and more information to follow.
