So, how is your bracket doing? It's March and madness prevails. I have two brackets this month. One, as you all know, for Villanova to win it all. The other, the personal bracket, because I want to do it all. As we know, that isn't always possible.
I've had many tough matchups this month. How to blend the college hoops playoffs, Quilt Month, Quilt Week, and Spring Break with those scattered surprise appearances by daughter Alyn? Alyn is the number one seed and took priority when she was in town. A couple of short, but sweet times out for dinner and catching up on things at school. Then it came down to those tough matchups between quilting events, quilting speakers, and the opportunity to see my favorite team live. Yes, the Wildcats won out due to great times at the Villanova Pavilion where Josh Hart almost landed in lap after one of his famous leaps over the press table and more great times at the Wells Fargo with good friends and good games. I did make it out to see the vendors in Lancaster, so I was able to squeeze a quilting activity in there.
*Sigh* That left some other quilting on the cutting table, temporarily. Some things wait. Some things won't. Our kids grow and our chances to spend time with them is precious. Sometimes, we have to go crazy for our favorite teams when they have great seasons. You never know when, and if, that will repeat. March was one of my lessons in making choices.
May your favorite teams always win, may your kids visit frequently, and may quilting always be that activity that is there for you and settles you back into reality. May March go out with a big Wildcat roar!
I hope April is quieter. I'm exhausted. See you at the meeting. I need to go do some quilting now......

Grace Katz will be our speaker at the April 11th meeting. Grace is very enthusiastic about her lecture/trunk show, entitled "Why I Quilt, Connecting the Quilter to the Quilt". She has been quilting and teaching Family and Consumer Sciences at North Penn High School for twenty years. Grace's quilts have won several awards at various quilt shows and she has been an active member of County Line Quilters Guild since 1997. She will be bringing many of her quilts and will share her inspiration with us. I have enjoyed talking to Grace and I know you will too!

MEMBER PROFILE - DELORES HOLZWARTH
How many years ago did you start quilting?
When we moved to Downingtown in 1979, I was looking for something new as well as a chance to meet some new people and signed up for a quilting class in piecing. After that, I took another class in applique.
What is your favorite part of the quilting process?
My favorite part of quilting is the actual sewing, although choosing fabrics and finishing a project is very satisfying. Hand quilting is something I enjoy too.
What is your favorite color?
Blues are favorites, although I also like bright colors like red and yellow. My favorite quilts are the scrappy ones so I like a full range of colors. Batiks are also fabrics which I like.
How many quilts do you think you have made?
Hundreds. I have made over 200 soldier quilts as well as a number of quilts for kids with cancer and for the NICU at Chester County Hospital. For several years, I consigned quilts at a shop in Bethesda, Maryland. Also, I hand quilted for a couple in Santa Fe, New Mexico who were quilt artists and had a shop.
What is your next project?
Most of my projects now are for charity, although I bought some strips of batik which I will make into a quilt at some point.
Tell us something the members may want to know about yourself.
Pat Sherman and I are two of the original founders of our quilt group. We have come a long way since then.
Book Review by Jean Zubert
Donna Andrews has a series of mystery books that feature a main character named Meg Langslow. She is a single woman working as a freelance blacksmith from Yorktown, Va. Meg has a very large, eclectic, extended family. She has a few oddball relatives which I am sure that we can all relate to. In the first book, Murder With Peacocks, Meg is a bridesmaid for her best friend, in her brother's wedding and her Mother's second marriage. All three weddings are on three consecutive weekends. Even though this is a murder mystery you will find yourself, at least once, laughing out loud. If you want a good, relaxing read pick up the first in this series - Murder With Peacocks.
Write As Desired
The Bargain Bin
Quilt shows.
Quilts all beautifully hanging in rows. Ribbons pinned on some like peacock
feathers, bold and proud. One quilt more individual than the next, inviting us
to look and admire.
Yet even
with all this accomplishment dazzling our eyes, where do we wonder off and
spend our time? Why across the aisle with
the vendors of course! (And in the last show we even had to travel to the
vendors.)
The vendor
mall was alive, full of samples, ideas and everything a quilter could need and
want!
I found
myself standing next to a bargain bin.
Five fat quarters for six dollars.
A bargain by anyone’s standards. Just then the vendor came with a large
tub of more bundles which she dumped into the bin. The bundles spilled over like a too full mug
of beer, flowing over the top.
There I was
at the Bargain Bin, and just like at the water cooler in the office, the
conversations started. I stayed there
for some time, having fun finding bundles and listening. It seems that if one shopper stands in any
one spot for any length of time, a crowd will gather and so it did. Soon there
was barely elbow room for the bundle hunters.
One woman
was looking for Christmas themed bundles and we found two. She voiced which one
should she get. A male voice answered, “Buy them both”. I looked up to see a smiling man. Now his response was completely astonishing
to me. My husband would have undoubtedly answered “Put them both back”! I asked if the couple were husband and wife
and indeed they were. The husband said that his wife was happy for a week after
the vendor show and that she may even bake him a cake that night! So there it was. A lot of happiness for
little money spent.
Finding a
little treasure in the bin brought much joy.
The love affair with fabric continued with the least expensive. The joy was great or maybe greater than had
the shoppers purchased an expensive item or yardage. Talk about feel good moments!
I then had
to ask the group, “Do you use the fabric you are buying”.
One quilter
said yes. She makes little gift purses
and the fat quarter bundles were perfect!
The others
just looked at me and said “NO”.
“So why do
you buy it?”
“Because we must have it”. “We
want it all”
There it is.
We shall go home happy whether we use the fabric we bought or not.
