We had such a wonderful program last month, hearing Jean Fox tell us about her love for crazy quilts as well as books. When she moves to Texas, there will definitely be a void in our guild.
I'm looking forward to this month's program with Janella Macbeth, quilter and author of Scrapstashtic Quilts: Organizing Your Scrap Fabric Stash and ACTUALLY Using It. Now if only the Scrap Fairy can visit my sewing room and organize my stash for me.
Denise Blake is organizing our Challenge for this year. She had fat quarters of a special fabric at the last meeting and will have more this month. Get yours and put your thinking cap on!
See you on October 9,

President Stephanie Braskey called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Membership Report – Diana Smyrl
36 members and 1 new member attending. Suzanne Doonan won the membership door prize.
Diana reported that the meeting minutes will be published in the Guild Newsletter.
We will continue the practice of charging .25 for forgetting your name tag. So, remember, everyone!
Treasurer’s Report – Debbie Becker
Bank account balance $18,942.
Quilt show net $4,893. Last quilt show net was $3,800.
Discussions – Stephanie Braskey
Stephanie discussed next the getaway at the Amish View Inn and encouraged the group to consider attending.
The group discussed email lists and duplicate emails announced by organizations and then perhaps duplicated in members’ email. The group decided it was OK to continue forwarding information of interest to the group.
Challenge – Denise Blake
Denise announced that the challenge will be to use at least 5 square inches of fabric in a 16 x 24 quilt.
Some of the challenge fabric was available for purchase. She will have more at the next meeting.
Newsletter – Kelly Meanix
Please notify Kelly if you are not getting the newsletter.
Everyone was reminded that side chats can be heard throughout the room. Please do not hold private discussions during the meeting.
The group discussed the quilt show and its possible future. This discussion will be continued at another meeting while we consider this more.
We held a lovely meeting to honor Jean Fox, a charter member and past president as she moves to Dallas, TX. Jean showed us many of her wonderful crazy quilts. She was presented with flowers and a proclamation that she was a valued and much loved member and will be missed. The group enjoyed cake with Jean’s name on it. Take care, Jean. We will miss you!
Stephanie adjourned the meeting at 9:00 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Leslie O’Brien

To the GREATEST QUILT GUILD any one could ever belong to:
Ever since the meeting night last month, I have been thinking of how to express my thanks for the recognition and all the kind words spoken to me at the meeting. It has been a joy to be a part of Penn Oaks Guild these past years and I shall miss being here to continue being a part of the group. Thank you for the lovely cake. It was delicious. I shall treasure the little quilt signed at all. Know that each month I shall think of you on the meeting night and will try to keep up with the activities through the internet and from anyone who has a minute to send me an email about the activities of the guild as well as news about members. Again, thanks for everything and my best to each of you with love. Jean

Janella Macbeth, quilter and author of ScrapStashtic Quilts: Organizing Your Scrap Fabric Stash and ACTUALLY Using It, will be our guest speaker October 9th. She enjoys hand, machine and paper piecing, applique, hand and machine quilting. She looked for ways to streamline the way she dealt with scraps and thus her system for cutting, storing and using scraps evolved over the years and led to an Amazon #1 bestseller. She will be bringing copies of her book for purchase. You can visit her website at www.janelleamacbeth.com.
On November 13 Kathy Dunkle, President of the Lancaster Modern Quilt Guild, will be speaking and the title of the presentation is "What is Modern Quilting?" This presentation will look at what are the characteristics of modern quilting. We will also look at some modern quilters and their work a well as explore how to take traditional blocks and make them modern.
Looking forward: December: Holiday Party and Block Exchange; January: Round Robin Demos; February: Challenge
The last opportunity to sign Jean Fox's quilt will be at our October meeting.

2018 Challenge- Denise Blake
The response for the challenge has been terrific, so far. I'm really pleased.
So, here's how it works:
I will have fat quarters available at our meetings. Each fat quarter will cost a member $1.00. It's not so much an ugly fabric, as it is difficult to use.
For the challenge, one MUST use at least a 5" square of fabric on the quilt, and no, that 5" can not be used on the back of the quilt. You may cut that 5" square up, just as long as 5" are used.
The quilt will be 16" x 24" (a good size for the raffle quilts at the quilt show).
The challenge will be at our February meeting, so you have plenty of time to think of something.
That's it. Pretty simple. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail or call me. Please look Denise's phone number up in the membership list.
Thank you.
Denise Blake
2018 Getaway - Ellen McMillen and Pat Sherman
We will take the Getaway reservations at the October meeting. As in the past, this will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The Getaway will be held at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, from February 21st to 25th. You may sign up for all four nights or 1, 2 or 3 nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. The balance of the room cost will be due by the December guild meeting.
In addition to our main sewing room, we have signed up for a small conference room on the lobby level of the Amish View Inn. It can comfortably hold up to 10 quilters which allows us space for 38 quilters at the Getaway. Hopefully this will provide enough room for everyone who wishes to attend to do so. We hope that some of our newer members will join in the Getaway. The room will have all the functionality of the larger room and has natural light. For those of you who would like a bit quieter working space this would be ideal.
The total cost of the two sewing rooms will be $530 including tax, and is shared by all attendees. If we wish to limit the increase in the sewing room/food fee to approximately $4.00 per person we would need 34 attendees. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $102.12 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $150.96 for Friday/Saturday nights. The Getaway reservation form will be sent via email about 10 days prior to the October guild meeting. Should you have any questions please contact Ellen ejmcmillen@verizon.net) or Pat patspatch@comcast.net). We look forward to another wonderful Getaway! If you need to call Ellen or Pat please look their phone number up in the membership list.
