October 2018 Newsletter

President's Letter
I hear that the September meeting went very well. I want to thank Bob DeCarli for a great presentation. I’ve only heard good things and I’m sad that I missed it. I want to thank Denise Blake for standing in for me while I was away.

Ah, the weather is becoming cooler and the comfort of a quilt is just what’s needed. I love the fall. It gives reprise from the heat we had during the summer. And it motivates me to quilt more. It’s also a time to become extra crafty for Christmas gifts!! Can you believe Christmas is only three months away? Well, enough of that.

Onto the October meeting, Ann Holte will be our guest speaker. She will be discussing her study on the Friends and Family: The Lancaster Diamond Sampler Quilt.  I always find it quite interesting learning about the nature and history of a quilt. So much information is discovered about that time in history; the people, the events, and the culture. I’m rather excited!

My October Challenge: buy no new fabrics and only start projects with my own stash. (And finish projects with my stash!)

Wish me luck!

Programs - Rita Marie Smith and Denise Blake
October 8 Ann Holte will present Friends and Family: The Lancaster Diamond Sampler Quilt.  This quilt is one of a small group of similar quilts that were made in Lancaster County in the mid-1800s by a group of quilters who referred to themselves as the "girl cousins."  Ann fell in love with this quilt and has been studying it and making the blocks since 2009.  She keeps discovering interesting and mysterious features about the quilt and the unknown quilter who created it.

November 12 In progress.  Pillowcase challenge.  As of our September meeting, wonderful news, 269 pillowcases have been made !  100 were made by Kathy Joyce. The challenge completion date has been extended to December.  Kits will be available at our October and November meetings to take home, sew, wash and return in a plastic bag.  Please remember the pillowcases must be washed in a laundry detergent that is the free and clear variety.  Directions can be found online at Ryan's Case for Smiles or on you tube as the hot dog pillowcase or our April 22 email to the membership.

December 10 Christmas Party - members only please.  We'll play our popular Quilto game with prizes, have the 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished holiday themed block exchange and refreshments.
