President’s Message
I was working on a UFO older than 6 years. It is a dog
applique quilt, designed by Amy Bradley. I had a lot of scrap pieces that I
planned to use for a piano key border. Well, there was still lots more. Not
wanting to put it into the stash, I decided to piece the strips for a jelly
roll race. I was looking online at
different tutorials. I came upon Jordan Fabrics. She has an adjustable jelly
roll race. You can size it as you want. Awesome! Check out her website Jordanfabrics.com. She
has many free patterns for download and lots of tutorials.
Well, I have 2 different sizes of jelly roll race. I will
put them together and supplement with fabric for the back. No the quilt top is
still not done, but I am bored with it right now and need to move on to
something else.
We have entered the time for selecting a new board for next
year. We will need members to volunteer for President, Recording Secretary,
Corresponding Secretary, Ways and Means and Membership. We are a small guild.
Without new members volunteering for leadership rolls, the guild rotates
previous volunteers. They are getting burnt out. For this guild to succeed, new
blood /new ideas is needed. I know, I know, the pandemic. However that hasn’t
stopped us so far, except for making money. Which is a key part of
operations. If you are a new member for
6 months – 1 year, please consider volunteering for a committee or board
position.
Bob has volunteered to take over the newsletter, so that is
1 less committee chair to find. Thank you, Bob. Bob has also decided to take on
our next sew along/BOM, to start in March.
Now don’t be scared ladies, it is a bargello. Bob has worked it out into
block form. Be on the lookout for instructions.
I for one am looking forward to it.
Our February meeting felt like a real meeting to me. We had
lots of show and tell, demo’s, sew along, September Acorn sale and BOM
information. The demos were great on zoom. The demonstrators were able to see
the other demo’s!. Thank you to Maureen
Carlson, Kelly Meanix, Carolyn Davis for being presenters. Thank you Kelly for
the sew along! I know it was a lot of work. Also, thanks for the gifts you gave
all the participants that finished their tops.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the March meeting. The
presenter is Lori Dickman. She will be speaking about Dresden plate, Diamonds
and Drunkard Path.
Hang in there, winter is almost over. Spring is around the
corner.

Programs - Jen Burke
As a reminder, Lynn has asked us to invite a friend to each
of these programs if we can!
A big thank
you to our February presenters! Thanks Lynn for showing us how to connect
binding ends. That’s always the hardest part for me! We also enjoyed your
lecture, Carolyn, on flange binding. An easy way to get a pop of color in! And
Kelly, I may no longer be so afraid of curves thanks to your glue basting lecture.
Thanks Maureen for reminding us that scraps and scrap systems work!
In March we
are looking forward to hosting Lori Dickman as she presents “My favorite 3Ds”: A trunk
show of Lori’s favorite “D” quilts! This trunk show features over 30 of Lori’s
quilt designs with styles that will cover every quilter’s favorites: from
traditional to applique to modern and everything in between! ! In this lecture,
Lori will inspire you to pick up those template rulers and have fun designing
and piecing fabulous quilts! Quilting templates have always been Lori’s “go-to”
tools for piecing fast and fun quilts. The Diamond, Dresden & Drunkards’
Path templates are versatile tools which she has used to create literally
dozens of different designs in quilts, accessories & wearable art!

Sampler Sew Along - Kelly Meanix
Thank you to the members that participated in our Sampler Sew Along. I am so amazed at the variety of the quilts and how different they all turned out. You all did a great job, pat yourselves on the back! Congratulations Sara Borr on winning the Gift Certificate to the Old Country Store.
Organize Your Sewing Space
Winter seems to be a good time to clean out and organize. Check out A Quilting Life for some really good ideas.
Don't forget, we are collecting things you don't want for the sale in September. Contact Robin McMillen if you have questions at robin_mcmillen@yahoo.com
POQ Web Site Update:
This month our primary guild organization documents have been added to our website. They are:
* Bylaws
* Policies and Procedures
* Expense Reimbursement Form
* Meeting Minutes
-or-
If you are not familiar with these documents, please take a moment to look them over. They explain how our organization runs.
In the Policy and Procedures document, you will find descriptions of all the guild positions. As the nominating committee is gearing up to put together a slate of candidates for the 2021-2022 guild year, becoming familiar with the duties of each guild position will help you decide if you can find it within your heart to take on one of these positions for the coming guild year. The guild is only as vibrant as the people who volunteer make it.

From Suzanne Stiverson
Thank you to all the Penn Oaks members who sent me so many encouraging notes. My surgery was a success and healed along with my kidneys being stable. I feel great and am making great strides in strength with PT help.
I am back to sewing.
I really love my Guild and look forward to seeing you face to face.
Much love and joy,
Suzanne
2020 Quilt Guild Challenge - Angela Brant
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, this is my favorite time of all
Pick a season and make a small quilt or wall hanging that strongly evokes that season
Quilts/wall hangings will be judged by fellow quilt members in several categories:
- Best evokes season
- Best use of color
- Most original
- Best quilting
Basic Rules of the Challenge:
• #1 RULE: HAVE FUN!!! Use your imagination! Your creation can be traditional or contemporary.
• Item Selection: Your challenge must be a small quilt or wall hanging, not a tote bag, pocket book, vest or jacket, etc.
- Finished Size: Your challenge can be any finished size you want.
- • Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, machine appliqué, hand appliqué, machine or hand quilt, etc.). We encourage you to challenge yourself and be creative.
• Fabric Requirement: You can use whatever fabrics you want in your challenge. There is also no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used in your challenge.
• Embellishments: Embellishments are optional.
• Label: Make sure you put a label with your name on the back of your challenge. Give credit to the source that inspired you. Please cover up your label with a piece of paper before handing it in for voting at our guild meeting so it’s a secret as to who made it.
- Due Date: Finished challenges are due at our June, 2020 guild meeting for judging by your quilt guild peers. All guild members attending the meeting will have the opportunity to vote anonymously for their favorite challenge quilt.
- ALL QUILTS ENTERED IN THE CHALLENGE WILL BE DISPLAYED.If you have any questions about the challenge please contact Angela Brant at angelalendenbrant@gmail.com or 484-682-3871.
