Penn Oaks Newsletter-September 30, 2023

 August 30, 2023

President's Note

Hey there, quilting buddies
Fall is coming. For us, it's the beginning of a new year. Deb has arranged a great variety of speakers for this year. We are going to try to be together as much as possible.

Photographing our quilts is up for September. Always a good idea to get tips to get better photos. I'm betting there will be lots of quilt photos.

We took a quick trip to Boston last week. The Fine Arts Museum was wonderful. We also went to the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell. They were showing quilts for several of the area quilt guilds. There was also a show of quilts by Timna Tarr. Look her up. Her quilts were amazing!

Another reason to look forward to the September meeting, is the show and tell. Can hardly wait to see what you all bring!

Programs

We will meet at Church for a virtual presentation on the big screen with Trudy Cleveland. Bring your smart phones for her exciting presentation.

  • Trudy Cleveland
  • Shoot Your Quilt
  • Virtual Presentation

Trudy Cleveland will be presenting her “Shoot Your Quilt" program. This is a program that will give you the basics on how to photograph your quilt with a smartphone and get professional looking results. Learn why you should photograph your quilts, how to photograph them, and what you can do with your images. This program is packed with practical tips that you can start using right away. You will be saying, "I didn’t know I could do that!" at the end of this program.

Tentative programs for 2023-2024 quilting year!  Our guild still needs to fill the role of Assistant to Programs.  Please consider volunteering for that role.  I know there is a possibility that I will need someone to help with the August meeting in my role as I need to take my son to Florida for his first semester of college. Below finds the tentative schedule for the year to come.  I am still looking for a zoom speaker for March 2024.  If anybody has any suggestions for me to investigate, please let me know.

Snacks
Snack list for the September POG is: D. Blake, A. Brandt, B. Calhoun, M. Campbell*, M. Carlson: A star after your name means you bring a beverage for the group in lieu of a snack. If you can't make the meeting, be kind and ask a friend to switch responsibilities with you so we don't run short.
2023 Getaway

Hello quilters! We will continue to hold our Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year, the Getaway dates are February 21-25. We will accept the Getaway reservations beginning with the September meeting and via snail mail, continuing throughout the fall. The registration form will be sent via a separate email around September 5th. For this year, only the Grand King rooms are available, with one King bed, limited to two occupants. The rates are as follows: Wednesday $154.00, Thursday $164.00, Friday and Saturday $ 214.00. Note that an 11% tax is applied to the room rates. The rooms in the main building will be closed for renovation. The complimentary full breakfast will still be offered every morning, accessible via the main indoor corridor. We'll be able to use that corridor to reach the sewing room as well. The sewing room is large and comfortable, allowing one 6 foot long table per quilter. The sewing room fee is $750 plus 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. The room is available from 2:00 pm Wednesday through 11:00 am Sunday. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. Come for one night, two, three or all four nights to sew, shop and visit with your fellow members. Just a reminder, the POQ Getaway is completely self-funded. Members are responsible for finding their own roommate and for sharing the room cost. Take a look at the Amish View Inn web site ( www.AmishViewInn.com) to learn about this wonderful venue.  Please contact us with any questions.

Bits and Pieces From The Textile World

1. Hydro dipping, also known as water transfer printing or water marbling, is the process of delicately transferring floating pigments onto a product through the medium of water. This age-old technique traces its roots over 2,000 years to Suminagashi, an ancient Japanese method of embellishing paper with inks. Over time, this captivating process has evolved, integrating various paint types and innovative methods to create mesmerizing designs on a diverse range of products. Now, we’re seeing makers hydro dip just about everything.

Learn the art of hydro dipping with Sarah, the enthusiastic creator behind Creative Ramblings. Sarah explains the process of water transfer printing and shares her secrets to achieve stunning outcomes with this technique. Follow her step-by-step instructions to create a marbled ceramic planter, and once you’ve mastered the basics, expand into a variety of home decor items. Learn the essential tips on sealing hydro dipped items to ensure a food-safe and long-lasting finish that preserves the beauty of your products for years to come.

2. Michaels is launching a handmade marketplace that will compete with Etsy. The craft store chain, which has 1,165 stores in the US, has been working to strengthen its ecommerce offerings since private equity firm, Apollo Global Management, acquired it in a deal valued at $5 billion in 2021 taking the company private.

Senior Vice President for Digital and Omnichannel, Kerry McGuire, said in an interview on Wednesday that the new handmade marketplace, to be called Michaels MakerPlace, is the third leg of a three-part ecommerce expansion strategy. The first was an upgrade to the Michaels ecommerce platform that occurred last year. Then, in March, the company added a third-party marketplace for craft supply sellers, more than quadrupling its product assortment from 250,000 to more than 1 million SKUs.

The third leg, which is slated to launch later this year, is the new MakerPlace marketplace where crafters will be able to sell handmade goods, DIY tutorials, and live online classes. “The market right now is fragmented,” McGuire said. “We want to bring it all together, from concept to classes.” Interested sellers can now join a waitlist and are being invited to set up their shops on MakerPlace in waves, including many who were accepted this week.
