President's Letter
Well, we've made it through January without any major snowstorms. I hope I don't jinx it but you know winter isn't over yet. Even though we haven't been snowed in, I hope you have had time to do some sewing. Our quilt show is just three months away and it will be here before we know it. There is a lot to do. Get your entries in, don't be shy. If you've never done it, getting a quilt judged is a great experience. You can learn a lot from the judges' comments.
We also need mini raffle quilts. In the past, this has always been a very popular part of our show. For more information about this project, see further in the newsletter or ask Kelly Meanix at a meeting.
There will be lots of opportunities to help with the quilt show. We strive for 100% participation and are proud when we can say that we've achieved it. Let's hope we can do it again this year.
At the January meeting, three people volunteered to be on the nominating committee. They will be looking for people to fill some open spots on the board for next year. Please consider helping out, there's probably a position that you would fit in perfectly.
Programs
February - Challenge
Get those projects ready there are prizes to be won. See Challenge Details for more information. Please write a blurb about what your challenge is.
> Portray any thing you love to do other than sewing or quilting. Any format; pillow, purse, pillow cases, baby blanket, place mats etc.
> Ideas such as bird watching, cooking, sports events, wine tasting, traveling, volunteering, reading, drawing, shopping, etc
Any size, up to a baby quilt size. We have to watch out for space at the PO Quilt show, so an apron because you love to cook can go on a mannequin.
A tote for gardening, shopping, the farmers market will fit nicely.
If you love to volunteer at the senior center, something(s) that you make for them.
Pillowcases because you love to watch your grandchildren.
Placemats with lobsters, wine, cheese because that's what you love to eat.
A sun hat
A blanket for your pet the possibilities are endless.
> Categories for awards could be:
> Most original portrayal
> Most fun hobby
> Challenge that no one could guess whose it is
March - Round Robin Demonstrations
Some of our in house experts will provide demonstrations and techniques that will either inspire you to do something new or help you improve the work on some of your current projects. The experts will not only demonstrate their technique but you will receive a handout to take with you that has recommendations regarding materials required and where to get more information on the techniques. As of now, there will be 3 different 15 to 20 minute sessions so you can choose 3 of the 5 topics.
Here is a list of our experts:
Carolyn Davis - Binding
Kathy DeCarli - Machine Applique
Jean Fox - Embroidery
Betsy Moses - Paper Piecing
Suzanne Stiverson - Beading
April - Speaker Jody Beck of Jody's Jems
Jody will present her beautiful and innovative Stack and Slash Technique. You can see her work at:
Membership
We had 25 members and two guests- one of which joined the guild also! Welcome new member GiGi Procano!
February Birthdays
15 Robin McMillen
21 Ellen Lance
26 Angel Henderson
Hospitality
Since the snack list for January was cancelled to celebrate with the guild birthday cake (which was awesome!), the list will be repeated: M. Kline, E. Lance, M. Lewis, R. Lodi, S. Longenecker, C. Lynch, E. Mayer, M. McGlynchey, R. McMillen*, K. Meanix*. A star after your name means you bring a beverage for the group instead of a snack. Remember to switch your obligation with a friend if you can't attend the meeting so we don't run short.
Fat Quarters
The month of February we will be doing spring colors like: pinks, purple, blue, light green and flowers. You still can bring Dec which was winter, blue and white because our meeting was canceled. Jan was Valentine and red and pink you can also bring those as it is still open.
Thanks,
RIkki
Quilt Show Chair Update
Oh boy! It really is time to get really ready for the show!
I will have a meeting, at the getaway with members who will be there. I will have another meeting for those who are not there and others, so we can all be up to date.
Please contact Suzanne Doonan with all of your advertising ideas where we could encourage visitors. Raising our attendance is a high priority.
As you know, we now have to cover the insurance cost for the show and it costs us more than twice what we have paid with the NQA policy.
Ellen and I will be taking care of the sales tax issues.
Suzanne Stiverson has been obtaining donations for our door prizes and even two ads.
Please be reminded of our planned changes to the show program. We will not be listing the names of the quilts or quilters. We will have information about the guild, the judges, and the vendors and door prize donations. Beyond that, I would like business cards or card-type ads for services, such as making tee shirt quilts, hand quilting or long arm quilting, or any other sewing or crafting. We don't want the program to be too big as that runs up the costs, but if provide some good information, perhaps our visitors will hold on to the program and be more interested in the quilt. Don't you find that it seems that someone always wants to get someone to make a tee shirt quilt? Or do some other project?
I am hoping we will provide Kelly with plenty of wonderful mini quilts and the little ticket bags get stuffed! Please remember the size of the quilts are to be 16" wide by 24" high. Use your imagination, all themes are welcome and create something using your best work!
Jean Fox is still looking for items for her gift baskets. If you have a ruler you bought but decided not to use, she could use that. Maybe you bought a charm pack or layer cake you don't think you will use, Jean could use that as well.
I'm sure you will think of several things I have forgotten to mention. But I'm on vacation right now. I will have sign-up sheets for the meeting.

Quilt Show Donations
Quilt Show donations are trickling in with more to come. I’ve received over $765 worth of items including batting from our premier sources, beads, thread, books, Dinner for two at Millers, and a quilt frame. Companies represented so far are Hobbs, Fairfield and Warm for batting; YLI, Coats & Clark and Sulky threads; AQS; Amishview Inn; Artbeads.com; Frank A. Edmunds; Nancy’s Notions. The Country Store and Wooly Lady. There is a team visiting other Lancaster shops. Leslie O’Brien will be providing the list of door prizes from the vendors at a later date.
We encourage you to ask your favorite local vendors to donate gift certificates or items that would appeal to women and/or quilters. In the past my salon generously gave color and cuts. . If you get a donation from your hairdresser or another local vendor, please give me all their critical data so we can put it in our show program and on our website. I need their name, item given, address, phone, e-mail and website. We send thank you letters to all who participate.
All these door prizes should help inspire your friends to attend the best local quilt show in the area.
Smiles,
Suzanne Stiverson
QUILT SHOW RAFFLE BASKETS
Now is the time to start bringing donations for the quilt show raffle baskets. If you have an idea for a "topic" basket such as a wine basket, a child's basket tell me about it. You can wait until March or April to bring that. I plan to have only ten baskets this year or if there is an abundance twelve at the most. Books in good condition can be used for door prizes. If you have not had time to go through your :stash: tell me that you what you expect to bring. This is a good "good money maker" and we need that. Thanks very much. Jean Fox
Quilt Show Judging
I hope that many of you will be interested in being part of the judging process. It is always educational, sometimes inspirational, and can be fun! We have two excellent judges. One judge, Stacy Kohler, was our speaker last March. We will need about 16 members working shifts throughout the set-up day. Judging will begin by 10:30 and should conclude by 4:30. We will work in two-hour shifts, four members per shift. We will also need three scribes, two primary and one alternate to give each scribe a break. The judges are very good at clearly dictating their comments. Kelly, Maureen and Carolyn have all been scribes and can tell you about their experiences. In addition, one or two members will be needed to set up our judging area (the kitchen) beginning at 9 am. Questions? Please ask me. Thank you! Ellen McMillen
Mini Quilt Raffle
I have already received a few mini quilts and they are wonderful! Please remember this is one of our major fundraisers at our quilt show for the guild. We do small quilts instead of one large raffle quilt. We love any theme you choose to do, the more the better because not everyone likes the same thing. Our only stipulation is no cheater cloth quilts, otherwise the sky's the limit! I have had many people ask if they need to put their name etc on the back. It is totally up to you. I will be collecting quilts up to and including the April meeting, so get stitching! Please note I will be away the last 2 weeks of April so all quilts must be given to me at the April meeting, no exceptions! If you have any questions please don't hesitate to email me kellymx@aol.com. Kelly Meanix
