August 2019 Newsletter

President's Letter

Happy Summer Quilters!
I’ve been working on my UFO’s! I have 3 of my 5-6 projects I hope to have completed this summer. I’m hoping to have them to show you at the Bee!
It’s amazing how quickly the season is passing. I’ve been trying to get a bit of gardening completed too…but there’s been too much rain to get all I want done. Then the grass gets out of hand…just a vicious cycle.
I do have some plans for our guild this year. I want to do some outreach encouragements to invite new members to our guild. I have been asked to be a speaker to the local Woman’s Club of Honey Brook. I plan to do a trunk show of my quilts. I’ll review how I began quilting, what styles I enjoy doing, and give information about our guild. I encourage everyone to just talk to others about your passion of quilting and always end with inviting them to our meetings.
We are looking for assistance with our committees. Please see the list of committees in our directory. If you want more information on how you can assist, contact me.
Lastly, I’d like to share one of my “almost done” quilts:
I want to express my appreciation of giving me these wonderful blocks!! I absolutely love them!
See you at the Bee!!

Programs - Summer Bee Denise Blake and Jen Burke
Although we are on our break, we do meet in August for our bee. The date will be August 12th, 2019. Doors open at 5:30 and you can come anytime after that. As it is not a formal meeting, we won't be doing snacks, but you are more than welcome to bring your dinner and/or niblets for you and and others to enjoy. On our August bee nights we usually just work on our own projects. You can bring sewing machines (bring an extension cord) or work on your handwork projects. We mostly just gab and sew. We wrap up around 9:00. If anyone has questions feel free to call me or e-mail me. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Ways & Means - Robin McMillen
I will be at the BEE in August and I want to start collecting items for the Silent Auction.  We are sold out because of the quilt show and I want to start collecting again.  If you want to go all Marie Kondo on your sewing room, please save some of the more useful items for your guild.  I am not sure when the next silent auction is scheduled but I want to start building up supplies.  If the fabric is nice but does not spark joy in you, donate it to the guild and help us raise some funds.  It also makes for fun at the meetings.
Reach out if you have questions,robin_mcmillen@yahoo.com.

Corresponding Secretary I am the new corresponding secretary for the coming guild year.  I wanted to introduce myself and ask each guild member to help me fulfill the mission of the Corresponding Secretary position.  Part of the position responsibilities is what is called "sunshine".  Sunshine is where cards are sent to members of the guild that have been ill, hospitalized, have lost a loved one, or are struggling in some other way.  Since I don't talk with each and every guild member consistently, I will need you all to e-mail me if you know of someone who could use some Sunshine in their lives from Penn Oaks!

Thanking you in advance for your assistance this year with this endeavor.

Summer Sewing Camp Fun!
Have you ever tried Glue Basting? I have glue basted my bindings and love the technique especially if I am taking my quilt away from home with me to work on and don't want to worry about losing pins.

Here is a great link on all the possibilities! Diary of a Quilter Glue Basting Tips
If anyone wants a tutorial at the August Bee, let me know I will bring a basted binding to show you. Kellymx@aol.com

Sew Your Stash Along
I hope you are all sewing along on the next round of our quilt. I know Rob Lodi has finished this last installment. You still have August to catch up! The next round will go out September 1st! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Kellymx@aol.com

Downingtown Library Fund Raiser
Once again the Downingtown library is sponsoring a quilt show to promote quilts as art, with the quilts to be raffled off as a fund raiser for the library. We are looking for any interested quilter to make a small quilt as a donation. The size request is 16” by 20” (give or take 2 inches.)

This time we have chosen a theme - “butterflies, birds, and blooms” which can be interpreted in any method including piecing, appliqué, hand or machine quilting. Any form of embellishment is also acceptable. Please sign or label your quilt and include a sleeve or corner triangles on the back for hanging. A dowel is not necessary.

Quilts will be accepted any time between now and September 14th. The drawing will take place Sept. 27th at an evening reception.  Raffle tickets will be sold at the library while the quilts are on display.

For a little incentive , the quilter whose quilt sells the most tickets will win a $25 cash prize.

If you know of a fellow quilter who may be interested in participating or if you can pass the information on to fellow guild members that would be great!
Our previous exhibit was well received by the library and customers so hopefully we can use our talents and love of quilting to raise some much needed funds.
Please let me know if you are interested in participating or if you have any questions.

Thanks so much,

2020 Getaway

Hello quilters! We hope you'll take a moment to consider attending the next Penn Oaks Getaway. We will continue to hold our Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year, the Getaway dates are February 19-23. We will take the Getaway reservations at the October meeting. This will allow everyone time to make their plans, and give our new members the opportunity to find out about this fun event. The sewing room has the capacity to hold 28 quilters, allowing one 6 foot long table per quilter. The sewing room fee is $400 plus 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $109.89 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $159.84 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. Come for one night, two, three or all four nights to sew, shop and visit with your fellow members. Take a look at the Amish View Inn web site ( www.AmishViewInn.com) to learn about this wonderful venue. The Getaway reservation form will be sent via email about 10 days prior to the October guild meeting. See us at the August Bee or email us if you have any questions.
