November 2014 Newsletter

President's Letter - Leslie O'Brien

Hello Everyone,

It is November. Thanksgiving is almost here and that means Christmas and the winter holidays are close behind. It is amazing how our focus can change with the turn of the calendar page.

It is time to reflect on what we are thankful for. Start with family and friends who are always there for us. Food and shelter are right up there. Don't forget pets and our cats that sew and play on our computer keyboards. He he yes, this Aniken the cat typing and you all thought it was Leslie. Maybe not, but he is sitting right here on my lap! Moving along the life sustaining needs continuum we arrive at fabric, sewing machines, patterns, books, cutting tools, rulers, and all the good things that support our habit. We are thankful for a healthy habit that supports our love of art and handwork. Our habit keeps us sane and provides all kinds of goodies from bed blankets, to table runners, to wall decor for ourselves and the loved ones I mentioned at the beginning.

This month some of us will go to Longwood Gardens and enjoy the outdoors one more time before the winter weather hits. What was that about snow mixing with rain on Friday? They can't be serious. Preparations for the spring show will continue. Cheryl Lynch, of Curvalicious (that's a quilt tool/ruler my friends, not a body type) fame, will be our speaker this month.

Don't forget to start your winter blocks for our December block exchange. Suzanne and Betsy are planning the December meeting and you won't be disappointed.

We are now in the thick of Penn Oaks Quilters Year 2014-2015. I hope you are all enjoying it.

See you at the meeting!
Leslie O'Brien

Update on Longwood Gardens Tour
We're working on a slightly different venue for November 9, a meet-up at Longwood. Look for an email from me on Thursday, October 30th with details. Those of you who gave me money will get refunds.

November Speaker is Cheryl Lynch who promises her own special inspiration. Her topic is Sensational Silks and she will vend her tools, books and silks.

December will be a special time for us. Silent Auction, a craft project (hand-out available at the November meeting followed up by email), and our annual Block Exchange (12 1/2 in block with a holiday theme). Wrap your block. Part of the fun is picking a "gift" only to discover something special inside.

Membership: Ellen McMillen/Rita Marie Smith
Thirty-eight members and one guest attended the October meeting. Please welcome our newest Penn Oaks member, Dana O'Connor. Dana is also a member of Red Rose Quilters and is the daughter of a charter member, Pat Sherman. We have three mother-daughter pairs in the guild.

Allie Barchi                8-November
Dena Corry              13-November

Many best wishes ladies!

Hospitality: Angel Henderson
November snack list for Penn Oaks guild meeting is: P.Gallagher*, F.A.Grider, C. Harkins, A. Henderson, D. Hill, K. Hill*.  Remember to switch your responsibility with a friend if you cannot attend and let me know. A star after your name means you bring a drink for the group instead of a snack.

FABRIC SWAP: Kelly Meanix
This month's fabric is "light prints". Please bring (23) 10" squares in a ziplock type bag with you name on the inside. I will have your batik set of swap blocks at the meeting. If you are not going to be at the meeting please contact me.

Next month's blocks will be "small floral any shade or color". Please pay special attention to the size, make sure they are 10" squares and please make sure you have 23 blocks, count them twice! I have bought just a bit more fabric to allow for a cutting mistake.

2015 Getaway:  Kathy DeCarli/Ellen McMillen

For those of you who are attending the Getaway this is a gentle reminder that the final payment is due no later than the December 15th guild meeting. Ellen will send you an email with the amount of your final room payment. Please keep in mind that the Getaway is self-funding. If you must withdraw after the December 15th deadline you will be responsible for your share of the cost of the room. In January we'll let you know your share of the Sewing Room rental fee which will likely be between 11 and 12 dollars. We're so looking forward to our new Getaway location!

SILENT AUCTION

The silent auction will be in December  so if you are cleaning out your sewing room and/or stash and have extra fabric, books, magazines, patterns, supplies, ufos, etc. that you no longer want and someone else  could use, please bring them. Last year we made over $250 in December, do some shopping for yourself!

Thank you,   Maryann

Quilt Show 2015
We have six vendors signed up.  Timberline Patchwork; The Quilt Block; Pottstown Sewing (3 spaces); Jackie’s Woolens, Happy Valley Quilting plus Donna’s Quits and Prims (name change).  This totals 8 of the 12 spaces..  Robin and I will be calling other vendors to confirm or not.

Diana Smyrl is getting lists organized for the program advertisements, along with Pat Sherman preparing to send out requests for door prizes.  Suzanne Doonan is making sure we have all advertising/marketing avenues covered.  If you have suggestions, particularly long-armers who might want to advertise in our program or provide door prizes (the latter is listed in the program and on-line), please contact the appropriate Chair.

Pat Smith that she is working to develop a list of ideas for making items for the Acorn Shoppe.  Pat’s daughter is also collecting vintage sewing related items to sell just like last year.  We were excited to hear that because we all loved that special touch last time.  Suzanne Doonan will make sure we advertise that we have a judge who has judged at Hershey.  Helen did a great job of getting two new judges.

Website is being updated with newest information on the Quilt Show.  Maureen will be putting the Vendor and door prize list up soon.  Ellen will provide the whole quilt entry form and rules on the website..

Robin McMillen is getting her food handler’s license and will lead the food committee.  She is looking into prices and possible vendors.  Keep the ideas coming.

Jean Fox needs ten containers/large baskets for raffles.  Make sure you contact her to make sure she doesn’t have enough.

We need strong guys for Show Set up day—Thursday April 30 in the A.M.  Please start talking to your family to chip in.  It is too hard for most of us to move the heavy tables.

Raffle mini-quilts will be 18”X18”.  PLEASE START WORKING ON YOUR QUILT AS THEY WERE TERRIFIC FOR PUBLICITY OVER THE YEAR.  TURN THEM IN TO KELLY MEANIX AS SOON AS THEY ARE DONE.  WE ARE ASKING EACH MEMBER TO DONATE AT LEAST ONE MINI-QUILT TO RAFFLE because this was a major fund raiser at our show.

Next Meeting will be in February 2015 at a deli or restaurant on a Friday.  Date, place and time to follow.

Criteria for judging quilts
For those of you who are planning to enter quilts for judging (and I hope that will be many) you may wish to read one or both of the articles I found while searching out this topic. The authors include all, or nearly all, of the criteria the NQA judges use when viewing our quilts. You can find these articles from the following links:
http://piecesofpye.com/articles/preparing-a-quilt-for-judging/
https://nonniequiltingdreams.wordpress.com/tag/quilt-show-judging-criteria/
I believe NQA once had this information on their site but I could not find it. If someone does find this information on their site please let me know.
Ellen
