September 2019 Newsletter

President's Letter
Hello Quilters! 

It’s been a fast summer for me. I think to myself, what events had happened to make it feel that I was so busy all summer long. Well, other than attending a quilt show with friends and other family gatherings and events, I’d like to say that my goal to finish 5 to 6 UFOs was accomplished! Five quilts! That felt good to get them done. Only thing, as I was pulling out some of them, I found more UFOs. I still have a stack of tops that just need quilted. That’s what I’ll concentrate on now.

As we begin this new year, 2019-2020, I see a great lineup for programs! We also have a need to fill in some of our committee chairs. We have Community Outreach, the Quilt Challenge, Publicity and History/Parliamentarian. If you feel led to take on one of these roles, please contact me.

Barbara Yates Beasley. bara Yates Beasley .

The guild is proud to announce that the speaker at our September meeting is Barbara Yates Beasley. She comes all the way from Colorado! Barbara will be presenting her stunning and unique quilts "Windows into the Souls of Animals".We will enjoy a lecture from her on how she captures the beauty of animals both domestic and wild in unique fabric and paper collage. They are spectacular quilts! She is part of the Handweaver's Guild of Boulder as well as Front Range Contemporary Quilters. Her awards list is long and she has had many juried quilts and artists in residence opportunities. Please join us in welcoming Barbara to our guild! October 14, 2019

Ann Tumolo, is a local quilter who will be talking about thread painting. She will be giving a trunk show with some of the marvelous quilts she has made. Come early (6:30 p.m.) and she will show us thread painting on her domestic sewing machine. Side note: Rita Marie and I took a class from her and it was a lot of fun, we learned a lot, and our "painting" looked really cool.

November 11, 2019

Brita Nelson (pronounced Breeta) www.questioningquilter.com, will be joining us for a lecture and a class. Her lecture, Every Last Crumb, an Adventure in Scrap Quilting will give us an insight into helping us with our leftover scraps and doing something meaningful with them. Our class will either be: Crumbs to Quilts where we take scraps and make our own fabric with them. This leaf is an example. She will also be giving me a live sample that I will bring to guild in September so that we can see what she is talking about. It's like we would create our very own custom fabric. OR: Folded Paper Piecing in which we would paper piece without actually sewing on the paper. The paper is like our template, which can be reused. A blurb from her description: "Foundation Paper Piecing made easy.  No printing multiple copies, no ripping and tearing, no picking little bits of paper out of the seam". I know we already chose the paper piecing one, but now that I have a handle on what she will really be doing, we have a re-vote. The class will be 1-4p.m. I'm hoping to get at least 10 people. We can have up to 20. The more we have, the cheaper the class.

December 9, 2019

It's never too early to start thinking of Christmas. We'll be having our holiday party. One thing we always do, and I'm not about to break tradition now, is a Christmas or winter themed quilt block exchange. The block will be 121/2'. You can piece it, applique it, embroider it, bead it, whatever comes to mind. It is strictly optional, but always fun to participate in. We put all the blocks, wrapped, so we can't see them, in a pile and draw names. Typically you don't get one you made. However many you make, you get back. I'm pretty sure some of us have enough to make a wall hanging by now. In fact, if anyone has completed a project from their Christmas blocks, why not bring it in for show and tell? We would all love to see them. We'll be playing some fun games, also. Haven't decided how we'll do goodies. I'll get back to you on that.

Those with a star after their name should bring a drink for the group instead of a snack.  Don't forget to switch your responsibility with a friend if you can't attend the meeting so we don't run short!!

2. I am collecting materials for the silent auction again and I will be at the September meeting.  Please bring in any items you would like to donate.  If it does not spark joy in you, there is the change that it will spark joy in others and raise some funds for the guild.

Corresponding Secretary I am the corresponding secretary for the coming guild year.  I am asking each guild member to help me fulfill the mission of the Corresponding Secretary position.  Part of the position responsibilities is what is called "sunshine".  Sunshine is where cards are sent to members of the guild that have been ill, hospitalized, have lost a loved one, or are struggling in some other way.  Since I don't talk with each and every guild member consistently, I will need you all to e-mail me if you know of someone who could use some Sunshine in their lives from Penn Oaks!

Sew Your Stash Along
I hope you are all sewing along on the last round of our quilt. I have decided that this will be the end. If you wish to make your quilt King Size I will send you to the website that will give you those directions (the last extra round).
I would like to have everyone who is participating to bring your quilt to the November meeting so we can take some pictures to send to the creator of the quilt. So try and catch up before the holidays are here! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Kellymx@aol.com 610-873-7211

How fun is this? It caught me eye because it is a "K" and because what a way to use up your scraps! You can go to Sew Me Something Good to find out how to make your own letter.

2020 Getaway

Hello quilters! We hope you'll take a moment to consider attending the next Penn Oaks Getaway. We will continue to hold our Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year, the Getaway dates are February 19-23. We will take the Getaway reservations at the October meeting. This will allow everyone time to make their plans, and give our new members the opportunity to find out about this fun event. The sewing room has the capacity to hold 28 quilters, allowing one 6 foot long table per quilter. The sewing room fee is $400 plus 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $109.89 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $159.84 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. Come for one night, two, three or all four nights to sew, shop and visit with your fellow members. Take a look at the Amish View Inn web site ( www.AmishViewInn.com) to learn about this wonderful venue. The Getaway reservation form will be sent via email about 10 days prior to the October guild meeting. We'll be at the September meeting to answer any questions. Feel free to e-mail us as well.

Downingtown Library Fund Raiser
Once again the Downingtown library is sponsoring a quilt show to promote quilts as art, with the quilts to be raffled off as a fund raiser for the library. We are looking for any interested quilter to make a small quilt as a donation. The size request is 16” by 20” (give or take 2 inches.)

This time we have chosen a theme - “butterflies, birds, and blooms” which can be interpreted in any method including piecing, appliqué, hand or machine quilting. Any form of embellishment is also acceptable. Please sign or label your quilt and include a sleeve or corner triangles on the back for hanging. A dowel is not necessary.

Quilts will be accepted any time between now and September 14th. The drawing will take place Sept. 27th at an evening reception.  Raffle tickets will be sold at the library while the quilts are on display.

For a little incentive , the quilter whose quilt sells the most tickets will win a $25 cash prize.

If you know of a fellow quilter who may be interested in participating or if you can pass the information on to fellow guild members that would be great!

Our previous exhibit was well received by the library and customers so hopefully we can use our talents and love of quilting to raise some much needed funds.

A Delicious Recipe from Cindy Vognetz

 Instead of a side of arugula, I served the chicken and sauce on a bed of arugula.  Delicious!! Oh almost forgot ... I used fire roasted diced tomatoes for added flavor.

Quilt Hangers by Robin McMillen

Hi Quilters

I have been making some mini quilts and hanging them on doors in my house using command hooks.  I discovered an easy and fast way to make a cute hanger for these quilts out of dry cleaner hangers

You will need

·         2 wire hangers

·         Wire snips

·         Craft glue

·         Scrap of batting

·         Scrap of fabric I used some left over binding. 

First cut the wire hangers to length

Then wrap the hanger is a batting remnant and use craft clue to wrap wire

After glue dries then trim off excess batting

Iron ¼ inch edges 2.5-inch-wide fabric scrap, Iron the ends as well then encase the batting covered hanger in the fabric and glue closed.  Use clips to secure while drying. 

Use to hang mini-quilts on a door or anywhere else. 

They hang nice and flat.
