September 2018 Newsletter

President's Letter
And so we begin our new quilting adventure at Penn Oaks Quilters Guild. I would like to say that the board wants to extend an invitation to anyone at any time to join us at our board meetings as an observer. If there is something you would like to present to the Board, please contact me and we can set you on the agenda for the next meeting. Board meetings will be held the night of the guild meeting at 5:30pm. There will not be one in September.
I would like to just make note how I feel our guild is in my eyes.
Our Guild is a Quilt:
There are those who are the bright scrappy pieces,
Those who are novelty, with their quirkiness and character,
Those who hold a place in the background,
Some who enjoy being the stitching that connects us together,
Some who know how to bind one another close,
But together, all of us are the batting that gives each other warmth.
As one, we are beautiful, cherished, and comforting.

Let’s go forward, cherishing what makes Penn Oaks special.

Helen Hofbauer

Membership - Pat Sherman
Guild Meeting Cancellations:  The Board will be communicating via e-mail by 4:00PM.  Please remember to check your emails.

Hospitality - Angel Henderson
Snack list for the September meeting is:E. Lance, M.Lewis, R.Lodi, J.Loncaric, S.Longenecker*, E. Mayer*, E. McMillen, R. McMillen K Meanix. A star after your name means you bring a beverage for the group in lieu of a snack. If you can't attend the meeting please remember to switch your responsibility with a friend so we don't run short.

Programs Rita Marie Smith and Denise Blake

September 10 Our friend and guild member, Betsy Moses, requested that her fabric and sewing items be donated to our Guild and as well as the proceeds from the sale of those items.  Suzanne Stiverson is downsizing and has donated beautiful fabric with yardage over 2 yards. I'm sure there will be many nice things that you just can't pass up.  Cash or checks accepted.

October 8 Ann Holte will present Friends and Family: The Lancaster Diamond Sampler Quilt.  This quilt is one of a small group of similar quilts that were made in Lancaster County in the mid-1800s by a group of quilters who referred to themselves as the "girl cousins."  Ann fell in love with this quilt and has been studying it and making the blocks since 2009.  She keeps discovering interesting and mysterious features about the quilt and the unknown quilter who created it.

November 12 In progress.  Pillowcase challenge

December 10 Christmas Party - members only please.  We'll play our popular Quilto game with prizes, have the 12 1/2" x 12 1/2"  unfinished holiday themed block exchange and refreshments.

January 14 Our own Robin McMillen.  Her topic - History of Visual Arts and How to Draw Inspiration From Your Favorite Artists and Reflect That in Your Quilt.

Ways and Means - Diana Smyrl

OUTSTANDING FABRIC SALE

We are having another terrific silent auction sale at the September meeting.Already one group of fabrics have been sorted and priced.  There are a lot of recently new fabrics and the yardage is quite extensive.  Another load of fabric was picked up in August and I am sure it will be just as exciting.  There is no speaker at the September meeting so…..”it will be shop until you drop.”

Quilt Tip from Marie Kline
Start a scrapbook with magazine pictures of quilts and color combinations. One who subscribes to several home-type magazines can soon compile a collection that is as inspirational as, if not more so than, an expensive book.

Pillowcases - Rita Marie Smith
Are you making up some pillowcases for Ryan's Smiles? Member Kathy Joyce has been busy.......
"I have 100 pillowcases made with kits cut for more. I'll divide them between Penn Oaks (100) and Calico Cutters (40), all going to the same place anyhow. I was inspired and moved by Linda Kerschner saying that Ryan liked the feel of a flannel pillowcase as opposed to scratchy hospital pillowcases."
If you are looking for a tutorial, you can find it here  Pillowcase Tutorial If you can only do one charity project this year you will find this fast, easy and a stash buster. One can be made in about 20 minutes. Flannel was also requested as an option as it is nice and soft. There will be kits available to take home, sew, wash and return at our October and November meetings.  Important  the pillowcases must be washed in a laundry detergent that is the free and clear variety.  Cancer patients can be very sensitive to the fragrance in the other types of detergents.  If you do not use the free and clear type, please give the pillowcases to me.

Challenge - Dana O'Connor
Choose an artist from the following list and create a quilt (no more than 150 inches in perimeter) either representing a piece by that painter or design something in the style of that painter. Bring to the March meeting unlabeled or with the label covered in a brown paper bag. Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Rembrandt Michelangelo, Paul Klee, Georgia O'Keeffe, Van Gogh, Monet Salvador Dali, Da Vinci, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Matisse, Degas, Rubens, Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth or Maxfield Parrish.

A Fun and Easy Project

In keeping with the strawberry theme, how adorable would these be with those cute strawberry coasters from last month's newsletter?  They also are another quick project and again you might have everything you need right in your sewing room. Strawberry Pincushion Tutorial by Down Grapevine Lane. I have made some and they are not hard at all. How cute would they be for hanging on a Christmas tree or for the Acorn Shop?

2019 Getaway
Hello quilters! We hope you'll take a moment to consider attending the next Penn Oaks Getaway. We will continue to hold our Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year the Getaway dates are February 20-24. We will take the Getaway reservations at the October meeting. This will allow everyone time to make their plans, and give our new members the opportunity to find out about this fun event. The sewing room has the capacity to hold 28 quilters. We have the option for another smaller room, if needed, which will hold up to 10 quilters. This should provide enough room for everyone who wishes to attend to do so. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $102.12 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $150.96 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. The Getaway reservation form will be sent via email about 10 days prior to the October guild meeting. Feel free to email us with any questions.
Ellen McMillen (ejmcmillen@verizon.net) and Pat Sherman (patspatch@comcast.net). 2019 Getaway Co-Chairs

Accuquilt Cutters and Dies

Just a thought since several of us have these cutters, are any of you interested in sharing dies? We could have a list of our collective dies. Those borrowing dies would need to use their own mats with the dies. If other guild members, who do not have a machine, would like to participate, they can buy a die they want, but no one has, and provide the mat. I am sure someone would do the cutting for them or with them.

I just want to see if anyone is interested. Seriously, we don’t all need to have every die there is. Send me an email and we can try to set this up.
