March 2019 Newsletter

President's Letter
Hello my fellow guild members!

I’d like to mention a few words about our upcoming Quilt Show. As some of you may know, I am the Acorn Shoppe co-chair, along with Denise Blake. We are still in need of volunteers, donations and consigned items.

Please sign up at the next guild meeting to volunteer…and let me just say, we do have a good time at the shoppe!

Donations are always welcome, but we do have many who like to consign items that they’ve made…which have been quite a variety of items. From totes, pincushions, clothing, and more! I like having a wide variety to appeal to all visitors to the quilt show.

Some consigned items have been previously loved items found/purged from sewing rooms. Those are most interesting to see what one feels ready to let go of, and another is so happy to find!

The Acorn Shoppe will be ready to receive item at the next meeting. I will be sending out a PDF of the form that needs completed with your consigned items. Please have with your items.

Thank you for your support!

Helen Hofbauer

Programs - Rita Marie Smith and Denise Blake
March 11   Annual Challenge. Pat Sherman has all the information posted below. .
As of the moment Cindy Kerr will be coming to the meeting.  We will present her with all of the pillowcases that have been made.  The final count will be announced that night as there are more coming.  Should you have some made, please bring them washed and bagged as this is the last opportunity to do so.

April 8:  Jan Mast, owner of The Old Country Store in Intercourse, is coming to speak to us about the trends in the quilting industry.  She will have been to the Fall Quilt Market and is going to tell us of all the latest and greatest going on in the quilting world that she learned at the Market. Jan may be bringing items from the shop for sale.

May 13:  Sue Reno is our speaker. Her topic is From Foliage to Fiber Art...and Beyond.  Sue is an award winning fiber artist who lives and works in Lancaster County.  Her lecture is an overview of her working methods and techniques.  Cyanotypes, heliographic prints, digital prints, thermo fax prints and collagraphy are explained and illustrated.  She will have a large selection of her work to share in a trunk show.  Please visit her website to read so much more about her.....suereno.com.

Please remember Programs is always looking for ideas for speakers. If you have someone you would like to see, be sure to contact Rita Marie smitty308@verizon.net and Denise Blake dewpink@gmail.com.

**********Winter is coming! Guild Meeting Cancellations:  The Board will be communicating via e-mail by 4:00PM.  Please remember to check your emails.**********

Meeting Minutes
There are no minutes as the meeting was canceled due to weather.

Hospitality - Angel
Snack list for the March guild meeting is: D. O'Connor, M. Paluba*, G. Procario, S. Reindel*, P. Sherman, P. Smith, R. M. Smith, D. Smyrl, S. Stiverson.  Remember to switch your responsibility with a friend if you cannot attend so we don't run short.  A star after your name indicates that you bring a drink for the group instead of a snack.

Quilt Show Raffle Bakets - Ellen Lance
Along with our auction quilts, the raffle baskets are a fundraising opportunities at the quilt show.  We are in need of donations to fill our baskets.  Although we have tried to change the format into themes we have not had much response.  I would like to request quilting notions such as fabric, patterns, rulers, books, etc. Please, look through your quilting stash for items that you can donate and bring them to the March meeting.

Quilt Show Reminders*  The volunteer sign up sheets for working at the quilt show will be available at the March and April meetings. Take a moment to schedule your time. This is a good opportunity to meet and greet our guests.
*  Helen will be accepting items for the Acorn Shoppe at the March and April meetings.
*  Quilt entry forms are due no later than April 1st. The form was e-mailed to you on January 21st and can be downloaded from our website. Ellen would appreciate receiving the entry forms as soon as possible.
*  Final deadline for the mini quilts and the raffle basket donations is the April meeting.
*  Members who do not contribute in some way to the quilt show will be required to pay the entry fee to attend the show.

Take a look at our web site http://www.pennoaksquilters.org. Jamie and Bob Loncaric have done a great job bringing our quilt show page up to date. Thank you Bob and Jamie!

Quilt Show Voting:

When attending the quilt show everyone will receive a ballot when they register so attendees will have the opportunity to vote on the quilts at the show.  Denise Blake is kindly making the ribbons that will be awarded.  Thank you Denise.  The categories are:

  • Best of Show
  • Best Workmanship
  • Best Use of Color
  • "Makes Me Smile"
Ellen and I are looking for two people to manage the details.  Please email one of us if interested.  You will be reimbursed for expenses.  Tasks required are:
  1. Design and Print the Ballots
  2. Provide a cute collection box / basket and a sign
  3. Collect and Tally the Ballots at the show.
This is a great way to get involved and as it is the first time we have different categories, you will be able to put your creative stamp on this process.

Mini Raffle Auction Quilts

The Quilt Show is looming large in closeness and we do not have many completed mini quilts yet. The mini quilts can be any design. They can be modern, traditional, seasonal or children's. Piecing and quilting as you wish. They must measure 16" by 24". They need to be bound and have a sleeve or corner triangles on the back so they can be hung. We are looking foe at least one quilt per member.

I always marvel at someone else's design or color combination and wonder why I hadn't thought of that because I just love it. Whatever you make will be wonderful. The more options we have the more interest we will attract. Please bring your finished quilts to the next meeting.

Thanks you,
Eileen Mincarelli and Jean Zubert

How cute would these be for the Acorn Shop at the quilt show? The nice thing is the tutorial will give you instruction on how to make them any size! Check out the free tutorial here!
