President's Letter
First off I want to congratulate Kelly Meanix for being featured in
the August 50+ Life Magazine regarding her quilting journey. Your can read the
article on their website.
We enjoyed our first meeting in
September with Barb Vedder as speaker. 29 members and guests were in
attendance. Barb remembers coming to speak at our guild in the past when there
was cake tasting. I am guessing this was for the food at our show. I was not a
member at that time. Everyone enjoyed
listening to her presentation on solid color quilts.
We now have 38 members per Kathy.
Thank you to all who rejoined and welcome to any new members. Blank membership
cards were emailed to everyone. Please inform me of members that are unable to
print their card and I will mail one.
I am retired at this point. Even
so, there has been weeks where I don’t get to the sewing room. I will have to
change that as I do have things to work on. Hope everyone is completing projects
and sending them to Kelly for Show and Tell.
As a way to keep members connected,
Robin McMillen came up with the idea of a Mystery Box. You should be hearing
from her soon about this idea and what it entails. I am looking forward to participating.
Maureen is now web mistress for our
website. Please reach out to her as she needs assistance with ideas.
Our sew along will be ending in
October. THANK YOU KELLY for all the work you did to send us 3 blocks a month
for a year. I have enjoyed putting them together.
October we will be hearing about
Aurifil thread. Watch your email for a zoom invite for October 12th.
I have never used this thread but have heard good things. Perhaps it is time
for me to give it a try.
As the weather continues to get
cooler, I think all of us will be spending more time in our sewing rooms, I
will. Enjoy fall with cool crisp
weather.

Karen of Red Bird Quilting will be presenting her thread lecture.
This is action packed and sure to make you learn more about thread. This
lecture is 2 hours, so we will have to “zoom” through our initial meeting to
get to the Zoom lecture! Bags of goodies from Aurifil are promised, you won’t
want to miss this!
In December we will be playing Quilto on Zoom. So wear your
favorite ugly sweater (there’s a prize) and plan to have a cocktail or mocktail
and join us for some Quilto.

There is nothing like a fun meeting and a good speaker to keep one motivated. We had a good time at our first meeting . Thanks Jen for the great speaker Barb was great! We had 18 members and 10 guests. Zoom has made it possible to keep in touch With our quilting buddies. The door prize was won by Deb Houck.We now have 39 members.

Survey Says:
Thank you everyone who responded to the recent Penn Oaks survey regarding virtual meetings. Thirty one (31) members responded and unanimously voted to continue with virtual meetings. The Programs chair will proceed and continue booking us virtual speakers and planning virtual events. This decision will be periodically re-evaluated especially as pandemic conditions change.
The Christmas Block exchange received 10 "yes"s to hold the block exchange this year. Details to come.

We are currently in the process of revising our web site. This revision will take several months as materials are explored to add to the site. If you are interested in having a say in the redesign of the site, please contact Maureen Carlson to become part of the web site design group.
Sampler Sew Along - Kelly Meanix
We are coming down the home stretch of our Sampler Sew Along. The last blocks will come out on October 1st, 2020. Are you keeping up or way behind? Do what you can and be sure to show us what you made no matter what the size. This was a way for the guild to work on a group project and we applaud everyone who made blocks.
I am so excited to see what everyone comes up with...... Are you thinking about your setting? My quilt top is complete! I will show it to you next month. I did all the blocks except one, can you guess which one? Using your design wall will help if you are thinking about doing sashing and how big or small you want to make it or maybe not at all. The choice is yours.
Don't forget about the signature block. Write your name, the date, Sampler Sew Along, Penn Oaks, Pandemic 2020 whatever you want. This is a way to make it your very own. That white piece on the block is very large and sticks out, so put something there. I am pretty proud of my embroidery on the block though it needs some serious practice....
If you have an odd number of blocks, feel free to duplicate a block you like. Maybe make it in different colors or just add a few four/nine patches if you are feeling like you just need to be done!
The goal will be to have the top together for the February meeting, that gives you 4 months. Extra kudos for having it quilted! The board has agreed to a Gift Card prize! I will pull a name from everyone who has completed their top just like last time. The only requirement is that 30 of the blocks that were sent out must be in the quilt. To take the pressure off, let's try and get it quilted by June 2021. Maybe (fingers crossed) we can meet in person and have an awesome show & tell for our last meeting of the year.
The extra paper pieced blocks do not need to be included but can count as your 30. There will be an extra surprise!!!???? Questions? Call or email me. kellymx@aol.com 610-873-7211

Community Outreach - Elaine Mayer
Hello Quilters!
Just a brief note from Community Outreach. Last month we donated 55 lbs of food and $50 in cash that I am aware of. This is not counting any food taken to Kelly's church.
We are continuing the Chester Bears (for those of you that don't want to sew bears, maybe a fabric or batting donation), the pillowcases for "A Case for Smiles", and support for the Honeybrook Food Bank. Rikki Newlander is collecting masks for Penn Medicine Home Care.
Yesterday Elaine Egan dropped off 17 pillowcases and I know Marianne Caporale has made a bunch. This adds to the donation of 16 from Carolyn Davis in the winter. Thanks to all for your generous donations! You may either drop pillowcases at Joannes or other collection sites, or I am happy to pick them up from your house. PLEASE keep track of how many you have donated so we have an accurate tally.
I am looking forward to in person meetings and sewing with others, and I know many of you feel the same way.

2021 Getaway-Ellen McMillen and Cindy Vognetz
Hello quilters! Our Getaway is still on the calendar. We recognize the uncertainties created by Covid. Please give some thought to the Getaway and let us know your feelings and/or interest in having this event. We will continue to hold the Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. The 2021 Getaway dates are February 17-21. The sewing room fee is $477.00, which includes the 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. The number of attendees the room can safely accommodate with social distancing is 16. The sewing room fee would be approximately $30.00 per person. Should we have a smaller group who wish to attend the Getaway there is another conference room available on the first floor of the Inn. This room can hold a maximum of 8 quilters. The sewing room fee for this room is $424.00 which results in a per person fee of $53.00. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $116.65 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $166.50 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation.
Danielle Dowlin, our sales contact at the Amish View Inn tells us the following about how the Inn is functioning under current restrictions:
The Great Room falls under “restaurant restrictions” and is currently operating at 50% capacity, while also maintaining 6ft. social distancing. We are offering our full breakfast buffet, but masks are required at the buffet, a queuing line is in place at the buffet, and disposable gloves are available to use before touching buffet utensils. All items that were available pre-COVID for special order are still available, and of course, many hand sanitizing stations are available both in the Great Room and throughout the hotel. If you are staying multiple nights, we are limiting staff/guest interaction and will be offering a modified daily stayover service. Our staff will be happy to make sure you have refreshed amenities, however staff will not be permitted inside an occupied guest room unless there is a special circumstance requiring attention. Masks are required at all times except when seated in the Great Room to eat. To keep one another safe it is likely that wearing a mask will be required in the sewing room.
We will send a follow-up email in early October requesting your opinion about holding the Getaway. Take a look at the Amish View Inn website (www.AmishViewInn.com) for more information about this venue.

Sewing Machine for Sale!
Hi Quilters,
Sara Reindel, donated to the guild, an vintage Singer 329K made in the early 60s. It is a cute blast from the past. It sews and has all the attachments and materials. It is heavy but I oiled it and had it up and running, the light works too. If anyone is interested please email me. I looked online and a reasonable price for this machine is $125.00. 2020 Quilt Guild Challenge - Angela Brant
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, this is my favorite time of all
Pick a season and make a small quilt or wall hanging that strongly evokes that season
Quilts/wall hangings will be judged by fellow quilt members in several categories:
- Best evokes season
- Best use of color
- Most original
- Best quilting
Basic Rules of the Challenge:
• #1 RULE: HAVE FUN!!! Use your imagination! Your creation can be traditional or contemporary.
• Item Selection: Your challenge must be a small quilt or wall hanging, not a tote bag, pocket book, vest or jacket, etc.
- Finished Size: Your challenge can be any finished size you want.
- • Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, machine appliqué, hand appliqué, machine or hand quilt, etc.). We encourage you to challenge yourself and be creative.
• Fabric Requirement: You can use whatever fabrics you want in your challenge. There is also no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used in your challenge.
• Embellishments: Embellishments are optional.
• Label: Make sure you put a label with your name on the back of your challenge. Give credit to the source that inspired you. Please cover up your label with a piece of paper before handing it in for voting at our guild meeting so it’s a secret as to who made it.
- Due Date: Finished challenges are due at our April, 2020 guild meeting for judging by your quilt guild peers. All guild members attending the meeting will have the opportunity to vote anonymously for their favorite challenge quilt.

CCQG Auction News

The Ways & Means Committee is putting the final touches on the October 2020 Fundraiser, our first online auction! Because of the generous donations of our members and external vendors we will have close to 70 items and services to offer.
