July 2018 Newsletter

President's Letter
Summertime, that’s when I begin my “New Year’s Resolutions.” I look to this season to have time to get in better shape; eating farm fresh produce and going for evening walks. Plus, I get more motivated to clean up my sewing room. I may even catch up on a few of my dozens of unfinished projects! I need to remind myself, “finished is better than perfect!”
If you, too, feel the need to clean out your sewing room, as chair of the Acorn Shoppe for the quilt show, I would like to begin to take donations and/or consigned items for the shop in September.  I’m looking forward working with the quilt show committee. It has been nothing less than a treasured time to work side by side with our guild members; getting to know them better and showing the community how we can put together a wonderful quilt show!

Have a wonderful summer and I will see you at the August Bee!

Past President's Letter
Thank you to everyone who made the wonderful heart blocks and nine-patch blocks for me. I’m looking forward to having some down time to put them together as well as the Polaroid blocks from last year that have been gnawing at me to do something special with.  Being your president for the past two years gave me the opportunity to get to know so many of you better.  I appreciate those who supported me in my role.  Keep on doing the wonderful quilting that you all do.

Quilt Show Report - Show Chair Jean Zubert requested the floor and resigned as Show Chair. Robin McMillen volunteered to be Show Chair. There was no further discussion as President Stephanie Braskey tabled any remaining show discussions and decisions to be held later and announced the break.

The group enjoyed a special break refreshment - pizza supplied by the Guild

The group then enjoyed a fascinating presentation by Joyce Hughes about how to embellish fabric panels.

We wrapped up the meeting with Show and Tell by our talented members.

Stephanie Braskey adjourned the meeting around 9:20 p.m.  It was getting late and there was no time left to discuss and make decisions about the show. People were beginning the clean up and leave. There will be no meeting in July. The Guild will get together in August for the summer bee.

Respectfully submitted,
Leslie O'Brien

Thank you so much Angel for our surprise pizza party! Let's do it again next year!

Some lovely quilt photos from our speaker in June, Joyce Hughes.
Pillow Cases For Conkerr Cancer
At our May meeting, Linda Kerschner spoke passionately about making pillowcases.  I was particularly moved by the realization that flannel would feel good to someone who has lost his or her hair due to chemotherapy.   When I began quilting, I used flannel for all my backing, but lost my taste for it, and have, or had, a sizable stash of flannel, now pillowcases.  I attend a small quilting group weekly at the Quilt Ledger in Christiana, PA, and was telling the others about Penn Oaks and pillowcases...... one thing led to another when Leslie Reese, shop owner said there is a group of women in Christiana who make pillowcases and drop them off at the shop, and Leslie delivers them to DuPont.   She asked if we'd like them, YES, and I have turned 35 or so pillowcases over to Linda for our cause, so a good start!   If you are up for a short drive, check our the Quilt Ledger at 326 N. Bridge St in Christiana.  It's a great little shop and you get 10% with your guild membership. One member has pledged to herself to try to make 5 pillowcases a week over the summer!

Here is the link to make the "Hot Dog" or "Taco " method. https://pinkadotquilts.blogspot.com/2018/06/pillowcase-tutorial.html
It's a great way to enclose all those raw edges and makes a nice finish. It takes me about 15 minutes to make one. If you have any questions please send me an email   kellymx@aol.com

2019 GetawayHello quilters! We hope you'll take a moment to consider attending the next Penn Oaks Getaway. We will continue to hold our Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year the Getaway dates are February 20-24. We will take the Getaway reservations at the October meeting. This will allow everyone time to make their plans, and give our new members the opportunity to find out about this fun event. The sewing room has the capacity to hold 28 quilters. We have the option for another smaller room, if needed, which will hold up to 10 quilters. This should provide enough room for everyone who wishes to attend to do so. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $102.12 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $150.96 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. The Getaway reservation form will be sent via email about 10 days prior to the October guild meeting. Feel free to email us with any questions.

Quilt Show 2019
We are so excited to chair the quilt show.  There was a thorough process conducted this spring to research possible venues in the area but we were not able to find another venue suitable to meet all our needs.  (Please email us if you would like more details)
MARK your Calendars!
  • Location : Griffith Hall in Ludwig's Corner (No increase in fees from previous years, deposit due in July)
  • When: May 3rd and 4th 2019 with a set-up day on the 2nd
What is NEXT?

  1. We're planning a quilt show committee meeting in the very near future. Be on the lookout for an email if you volunteered to be a committee chair.
  2. What can you do now to support the show? Make a mini raffle quilt!  Eileen Mincarelli and Jean Zubert will be co-chairing this effort. The dimensions are 16" x 24", portrait orientation. The quilt must be complete and properly finished. There are no other rules for this quilt other than to make it your best effort, a work you'd be proud to present to a friend.
  3. If you have not already done so, start planning and working on projects you would like to display in the show!  What makes a great quilt show is beautiful quilts on display to inspire visitors to create.  We need your quilts ;)
We feel a renewed sense of energy and commitment to continue the Penns Oaks Tradition of an excellent show we can all be proud of.   This can only happen with your support.  Feel free to email us with questions
