May 2019 Newsletter

President's Letter
I only have a few important words for all of you this month.

The Quilt Show, it’s my favorite part of our guild, with all of us working together for our united success!

Volunteer of the Year! There are so many deserving members for this award. Please don’t forget to nominate someone.

I want to thank those who had came to me at the last meeting and volunteered to take on our open positions in the guild. It takes all of us, taking turns, to keep this wonderful group going!

See you at the show!

May- Sue Reno is an award winning fiber artist who lives and works in Lancaster County, PA. Her rich and intricate art quilts featuring landscape images, botanical subjects and local wildlife are inspired by her surroundings, incorporating plants from her extensive organic garden and imagery from the mighty Susquehanna River. She also works with architectural subjects, focusing on historical buildings that are in the process of renovation.

She employs surface design techniques including cyanotypes, heliographic prints, and image transfers as the basis for works that also incorporate unusual and hand painted fabrics, hand and machine stitching, felting, and beadwork.

Sue's work was selected for the U.S. State Department Art in Embassies program in Vientiane, Laos. Her “Silk Mill #3”is part of the permanent fine art collection of the Pennsylvania State Museum. Her work has been featured in publications including Quilting Arts Magazine, Machine Quilting Unlimited, The Quilt Life Magazine, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, Seasonal Palette, The Studio Quilt and 1000 Artisan Textiles, and in an episode of Simply Quilts on HGTV. Sue is featured in several episodes of Quilting Arts TV, airing on PBS stations nationwide. An instructional video of her techniques was released by Quilting Arts in 2014.

Sue was one of a select group of artists chosen to participate in the James Webb Space Telescope Artist Event at NASA Goddard Space Center. She has exhibited in solo shows as well as participating in numerous art and fine craft exhibits at venues including The Pennsylvania State Museum, the Robeson gallery at Penn State, the Wayne Art Center, Seton Hill University, and the Bellefonte Museum, all in PA; the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY, the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, TX, the Greater Denton Art Council, TX, the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY, The Vision Gallery in Chandler, AZ, the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, NJ, and the Museum of Fine Art in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. As part of SAQA exhibits her work has traveled worldwide to venues in Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Her career includes lecturing on the creative process and serving as a juror for fine craft and quilt exhibitions.

Sue’s website at suereno.com features a gallery of her work, including the series Flora and Fauna, The Garden, The Woods, The Structures, and The River.  Her blog at suereno.blogspot.com is updated frequently with work in progress, news about exhibits, and observations on life in Lancaster County. Find her on Facebook at

Sue is bringing small quilted items and original prints for purchase.  Cash or a check is acceptable for payment.  If she can get a connection, credit cards will be accepted.

June- Michele McLaughlin is coming and will be telling us all about  The History of the Sunbonnet Quilt Pattern.  Michele has been quilting for over 35 years and sewing since she was a child.  She is the founder of the Lehigh Valley Quilt Study Group and has a membership in various quilt organizations including the American Quilt Study Group.  She has completed various classes in quilt appraisal and history and has a special interest in researching Pennsylvania quilts and makers.  Sunbonnets remain one of the most beloved--and maligned--quilt patterns of the 20th century.  This lecture is one of her most popular and provides an insight to the development of this quilt pattern.  Michele's trunk show features over 50 different examples and demonstrates the versatility and humor this pattern continues to provide quilt makers.

Members and guests are encouraged to bring their own sunbonnet quilts for Michele to review and possibly identify the pattern.

Anyone know who can repair/restore old quilts? Please contact Denise Blake: dewpink@gmail.com. Thanks.

Quilt Show News
Our quilt show will be here in one week! Your quilt show committee is working hard to complete the final details. We have a wonderful group of 10 raffle baskets, most with special themes. Many of you have seen the creative mini raffle quilts during Show and Tell at our guild meetings. Helen and her assistants are assembling a large variety of items for sale at the Acorn Shoppe. Robin and her staff are preparing the delicious goodies for the Dresden Plate. Don't forget to bring the cakes and other baked goods! We will have 103 quilts on display. Remember to fill out your ballot for Best of Show, Best Use of Color, Best Workmanship and Makes Me Smile. We may not always have a White Glove on the floor so we will be handing out plastic gloves at the registration table. For those of you who have kindly volunteered to White Glove please do circulate; it is a wonderful way to welcome our guests. Please note Dana's message about volunteering. This is a great opportunity to meet and greet our guests.

Two reminders: Bring in your guilts on Thursday, May 2nd between 9 and 10am. Please wear your Penn Oaks name tag during the quilt show. While putting on a quilt show is work it is also fun!  It's a great feeling to see what a small group of quilters can accomplish.

Any questions? Contact Robin McMillen (robin_mcmillen@yahoo.com ) or Ellen McMillen (ejmcmillen@verizon.net)

Quilt Show Volunteers

We still have many opportunities for volunteering at the quilt show. There are several members who have not volunteered for anything. Remember, if you volunteer to help at the show, you do not have to pay the admission fee. Please email me if you would like to help.  Thank you, Dana O'Connor

Mini Quilts

If anyone still has a finished Mini Quilt or almost finished, we will still take it.  Just let either Eileen or Jean know. We will make arrangements to pick it up or meet you somewhere. One or two more would be great. A BIG THANK YOU to all of those that have already completed a quilt.
