Ann Tumolo, is a local quilter who will be talking about thread painting. She will be giving a trunk show with some of the marvelous quilts she has made. Come early (6:30 p.m.) and she will show us thread painting on her domestic sewing machine. Side note: Rita Marie and I took a class from her and it was a lot of fun, we learned a lot, and our "painting" looked really cool.

Brita Nelson (pronounced Breeta) www.questioningquilter.com, will be joining us for a lecture and a class. Her lecture, Every Last Crumb, an Adventure in Scrap Quilting will give us an insight into helping us with our leftover scraps and doing something meaningful with them. Our class will either be: Crumbs to Quilts where we take scraps and make our own fabric with them. This leaf is an example. She will also be giving me a live sample that I will bring to guild in September so that we can see what she is talking about. It's like we would create our very own custom fabric. OR: Folded Paper Piecing in which we would paper piece without actually sewing on the paper. The paper is like our template, which can be reused. A blurb from her description: "Foundation Paper Piecing made easy.  No printing multiple copies, no ripping and tearing, no picking little bits of paper out of the seam". I know we already chose the paper piecing one, but now that I have a handle on what she will really be doing, we have a re-vote. The class will be 1-4p.m. I'm hoping to get at least 10 people. We can have up to 20. The more we have, the cheaper the class.

It's never too early to start thinking of Christmas. We'll be having our holiday party. One thing we always do, and I'm not about to break tradition now, is a Christmas or winter themed quilt block exchange. The block will be 121/2'. You can piece it, applique it, embroider it, bead it, whatever comes to mind. It is strictly optional, but always fun to participate in. We put all the blocks, wrapped, so we can't see them, in a pile and draw names. Typically you don't get one you made. However many you make, you get back. I'm pretty sure some of us have enough to make a wall hanging by now. In fact, if anyone has completed a project from their Christmas blocks, why not bring it in for show and tell? We would all love to see them. We'll be playing some fun games, also. Haven't decided how we'll do goodies. I'll get back to you on that.

That's it, so far. Any questions feel free to contact me.

Ways & Means - Robin McMillen

1. I will be presenting the findings of the Quilt Show survey at the October meeting.  If you have not done so already, please fill out the survey.  It is only 9 questions, follow the link. You should have received this is in a separate email.

2. Please bring items for silent auction to the meeting I will continue to collect items.  Also, if you hear of anyone else with large quantities of sewing items to donate, please either collect the items yourself or reach out to me (610)836-1363.  I am working to accumulate materials for a potential Tent Sale.

3. That brings me to my next request.  I am working on an idea for a Penn Oaks Tent Sale as a fund raiser.  I need a committee, I cannot do this alone.  Please email me at robin_mcmillen@yahoo.com or call my cell if you are interested in joining the Ways and Means committee to assist with a new fund raiser (Still in the idea phase).

2020 Getaway

Hello quilters! We will be taking reservations for the Getaway at the October meeting.  We will continue to hold our Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year, the Getaway dates are February 19-23. The sewing room has the capacity to hold 28 quilters, allowing one 6 foot long table per quilter. The sewing room fee is $400 plus 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $109.89 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $159.84 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. Come for one night, two, three or all four nights to sew, shop and visit with your fellow members. Take a look at the Amish View Inn web site ( www.AmishViewInn.com) to learn about this wonderful venue. The Getaway reservation form will be sent via email about 7-10 days prior to the October guild meeting. Feel free to e-mail us with any questions.

Sew Along -Kelly Meanix
Please remember to finish up your quilts and bring them to the November meeting. Everyone who finished their top (it does not need to be quilted) will be eligible to win a gift card to the Old Country Store. We will pull one name at the November meeting.
Plans are being made to have another sew along in 2020, stay tuned.

Corresponding Secretary
I am the corresponding secretary for the coming guild year.  I am asking each guild member to help me fulfill the mission of the Corresponding Secretary position.  Part of the position responsibilities is what is called "sunshine".  Sunshine is where cards are sent to members of the guild that have been ill, hospitalized, have lost a loved one, or are struggling in some other way.  Since I don't talk with each and every guild member consistently, I will need you all to e-mail me if you know of someone who could use some Sunshine in their lives from Penn Oaks!

Thanking you in advance for your assistance this year with this endeavor.

Penn Oaks Quilters:
Have you been keeping up with our June speaker's blog on suffragettes at  pennsylvaniapiecemaker.blogspot.com?  --  I have.
Have you picked out a design for a suffragette-inspired quilt?  -- I have (but I haven't started  it yet).

In the Pennsylvania Piecemaker  blog, there are many local Allentown historical references.  While I am finding them interesting as my mother's family has strong roots in the Allentown and Upper Bucks county areas and these blog references bring back memories, many of you do not have this connection.

I also feel I should know more about the general history of our gaining the right to vote but don't have that information stored in my memory banks -- even though I was trained to be a high school history teacher many years ago.  This has lead me on a quest to find some more general details about the suffrage movement.  Enter:  the History Channel at

Doesn't many of the issues discussed in this article relate to our current life times as well as the here and now of 2019?
