September 2020 Newsletter

President's Letter
The summer has come and gone. The August Bee had about 12 members attend on Zoom. As we enter fall, our guild year begins. The board is working hard to keep membership interest.

We have exciting speakers lined up for September and October.  September we will hear from Barb Vedder on Sensational Solid Color Quilts.  We will also have an auction item at the meeting, see the pictures below. October speaker is Karen Miller from Redbird Quilt Company, talking to us about her Aurifilosophy.  I am looking forward to all the programs Jen has been working hard to line up.

In an effort to advertise our guild, we are opening our September Zoom meeting and presentation by Barb Vedder to friends at no charge. There is no limit to the number of people you invite to attend. Please email me with the names so I know who they are to admit them into the meeting.

Kelly's sew along is coming to an end. Have you thought about the layout you want? Robin and Helen have volunteered to organize a block exchange so all the members can be in touch with each other on some level.

Penn Oaks has many years of historical information. It was discussed at the board meeting to digitize this information and possibly post a snapshot of our history on social media. Given that, we need one or more persons that can take on the job of digitizing the information.  Please email me with your interest.

Carolyn Davis has 28 kits for the veteran quilts project started last year. We are continuing this project for this year. You can contact Carolyn or Lynn to get a kit. We need 7 yards of patriotic fabric for borders and 7 for binding. We need your help in getting these tops made. Carolyn and Lynn have graciously volunteered to quilt the tops.

We are continuing with the door prize to all members and guests that attend our Zoom meetings. If you have a donation, please contact Kathy DiCarli. All donors must be able to mail or deliver their item to the winner.

Please send me your show and tell pictures so everyone can see them at the meeting.

Programs - Jen Burke

As a reminder, Lynn has asked us to invite a friend to each of these programs if we can!
September
Join us for a Zoom session with Barb Vedder of fun with Barb. She will be presenting Sensational Solid Quilts. This will not be the same lecture for those of you who are also in Calico Cutters. This is a new lecture from Barb and I’m excited that we get to participate in this brand-new lecture.
October
Karen of Red Bird Quilting will be presenting her thread lecture. This is a fabulous lecture, sure to make you learn more about thread. This lecture is 2 hours, so we will have to “zoom” through our initial meeting to get to the Zoom lecture! Bags of goodies from Aurafil are promised, you won’t want to miss this fabulous Zoom meeting!

Membership - Kathy and Bob DeCarli and Marianne Caporale
We have a new member, Deborah Hauck Welcome Deb. She already attended a Zoom meeting. She has two daughters. One will be attending Pitt this fall. Deb is interested in learning free motion quilting.
We now have 29 paid members.

I want to thank the Guild for my unexpected birthday gift! I'm looking forward to getting out to the store to use the gift card.
Stay well,
Kathy Timko

Ways & Means - Robin McMillen
No news on the Acorn Shoppe but I would like to share something interesting.  Over the summer, I helped two of my professional friends, one is a lawyer and one is a Phd Chemist working for Johnson and Johnson on Covid treatment.  I helped them learn about sewing and the wonders of having a sewing machine at home.  Both of these friends bought sewing machines, Bernette machines from the Country Store.  How cool is that?  They both are looking for a hobby since they are spending so much time at home and they also are trying to get their mind off their troubles.  Sewing is a great way to do that.  Hopefully they may consider joining our guild at some point.  Who knows?

All things domestic seem to be new again.

Charity Outreach - Elaine Mayer
Dear Quilters,
As we continue to ride out the pandemic I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. This is an uneasy time for some of us; maybe you are sewing more instead of going out.

Please keep our charities in the front of your minds. We continue with the food drive for the Honeybrook Food Pantry.  St Peter Parish has a monthly food drive and toiletries for Honeybrook Food Bank. There is a trailer in the parking lot and they collect the fourth Saturday and Sunday of every month (fourth full week). It is a no contact drop off. Kelly's church collects non perishable food items or toiletries, please call for hours it is open. You may either call me for a pick up or drop them off yourself.

We are continuing the Valor Quilts for Veteran patients of the Main Line Home Care and Hospice (Carolyn Davis has kits made up. Please contact her if you would like a kit. Additionally, we are making kids pillowcases for A Case for Smiles. I am happy to pick up your pillowcases and get them to a donation center.

We are also collecting the Chester Bears. Our last donation to Chester County Hospital included 16 Bears! Just yell for a pick up at your home
If you are so inclined to assist with Masks for Penn Care at Home, please let Rikki Newlander know that you have them.

I look forward to a face to face meeting at some point in the near future.
Are any of you interested in a socially distanced sew in? I could accommodate about 6-8 people in my home. Please email me at elainemaye@gmail.com if you have any interest.

Happy Stitching to you all!
Elaine Mayer

Lynn Telson's 3 quilts.

I haven’t been able to get a lot done. Finished the sew along from last year, finished the bedspread that we were planning to take to ND, caught up with this years sew along.
Now I’m trying to make up for my lost lost March-June season for work and haven’t been in my studio for weeks
Hope everyone is well!
Marti Campbell

I made a pin cushion my friend Alison who is getting her first sewing machine.  I ordered the cool sparkly button from @tabithasewer on Instagram.  It is like a disco button :) Robin McMillen

I was asked to do an interview for a magazine last winter. It just came out in August. It was a little scary but in the end I am glad I did it. If you want to read the article you can go to my blog and click on the link.

2020 Quilt Guild Challenge - Angela Brant

Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, this is my favorite time of all

Pick a season and make a small quilt or wall hanging that strongly evokes that season

Quilts/wall hangings will be judged by fellow quilt members in several categories:
  1. Best evokes season
  2. Best use of color
  3. Most original
  4. Best quilting
Basic Rules of the Challenge:
• #1 RULE: HAVE FUN!!! Use your imagination! Your creation can be traditional or contemporary.
• Item Selection: Your challenge must be a small quilt or wall hanging, not a tote bag, pocket book, vest or jacket, etc.
  • Finished Size: Your challenge can be any finished size you want.
  • • Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, machine appliqué, hand appliqué, machine or hand quilt, etc.). We encourage you to challenge yourself and be creative.
• Fabric Requirement: You can use whatever fabrics you want in your challenge. There is also no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used in your challenge.
• Embellishments: Embellishments are optional.

• Label: Make sure you put a label with your name on the back of your challenge. Give credit to the source that inspired you. Please cover up your label with a piece of paper before handing it in for voting at our guild meeting so it’s a secret as to who made it.
  • Due Date: Finished challenges are due at our April, 2020 guild meeting for judging by your quilt guild peers. All guild members attending the meeting will have the opportunity to vote anonymously for their favorite challenge quilt.
  • ALL QUILTS ENTERED IN THE CHALLENGE WILL BE DISPLAYED.If you have any questions about the challenge please contact Angela Brant at angelalendenbrant@gmail.com or 484-682-3871

Sampler Sew Along - Kelly Meanix
We are coming down the home stretch of our Sampler Sew Along. The last blocks will come out on October 1st, 2020. Are you keeping up or way behind? Do what you can and be sure to show us what you made no matter what the size. This was a way for the guild to work on a group project and we applaud everyone who made blocks.

I am so excited to see what everyone comes up with. Are you thinking about your setting? I am not sure what I am doing yet. I have included a picture of my quilt as of now. I did all the blocks except one, can you guess which one? Using your design wall will help if you are thinking about doing sashing and how big or small you want to make it or maybe not at all. The choice is yours.

Don't forget about the signature block. Write your name, the date, Sampler Sew Along, Penn Oaks, Pandemic 2020 whatever you want. This is a way to make it your very own. That white  piece on the block is very large and sticks out, so put something there.

If you have an odd number of blocks, feel free to duplicate a block you like. Maybe make it in different colors or just add a few four/nine patches if you are feeling like you just need to be done!

The goal will be to have the top together for the February meeting, that gives you 4 months. Extra kudos for having it quilted! The board has agreed to a Gift Card prize! I will pull a name from everyone who has completed their top just like last time. The only requirement is that 30 of the blocks that were sent out must be in the quilt. To take the pressure off, let's try and get it quilted by June 2021. Maybe (fingers crossed) we can meet in person and have an awesome show & tell for our last meeting of the year.

The extra paper pieced blocks do not need to be included but can count as your 30. And maybe an extra surprise!!!???? Questions? Call or email me. kellymx@aol.com  610-873-7211

My quilt includes the September blocks.
