September 2020 Newsletter

President's Letter
The summer has come and gone. The August Bee had about 12 members attend on Zoom. As we enter fall, our guild year begins. The board is working hard to keep membership interest.

We have exciting speakers lined up for September and October.  September we will hear from Barb Vedder on Sensational Solid Color Quilts.  We will also have an auction item at the meeting, see the pictures below. October speaker is Karen Miller from Redbird Quilt Company, talking to us about her Aurifilosophy.  I am looking forward to all the programs Jen has been working hard to line up.

In an effort to advertise our guild, we are opening our September Zoom meeting and presentation by Barb Vedder to friends at no charge. There is no limit to the number of people you invite to attend. Please email me with the names so I know who they are to admit them into the meeting.

Kelly's sew along is coming to an end. Have you thought about the layout you want? Robin and Helen have volunteered to organize a block exchange so all the members can be in touch with each other on some level.

Penn Oaks has many years of historical information. It was discussed at the board meeting to digitize this information and possibly post a snapshot of our history on social media. Given that, we need one or more persons that can take on the job of digitizing the information.  Please email me with your interest.

Carolyn Davis has 28 kits for the veteran quilts project started last year. We are continuing this project for this year. You can contact Carolyn or Lynn to get a kit. We need 7 yards of patriotic fabric for borders and 7 for binding. We need your help in getting these tops made. Carolyn and Lynn have graciously volunteered to quilt the tops.

We are continuing with the door prize to all members and guests that attend our Zoom meetings. If you have a donation, please contact Kathy DiCarli. All donors must be able to mail or deliver their item to the winner.

Please send me your show and tell pictures so everyone can see them at the meeting.

Programs - Jen Burke

As a reminder, Lynn has asked us to invite a friend to each of these programs if we can!
September
Join us for a Zoom session with Barb Vedder of fun with Barb. She will be presenting Sensational Solid Quilts. This will not be the same lecture for those of you who are also in Calico Cutters. This is a new lecture from Barb and I’m excited that we get to participate in this brand-new lecture.
October
Karen of Red Bird Quilting will be presenting her thread lecture. This is a fabulous lecture, sure to make you learn more about thread. This lecture is 2 hours, so we will have to “zoom” through our initial meeting to get to the Zoom lecture! Bags of goodies from Aurafil are promised, you won’t want to miss this fabulous Zoom meeting!

Membership - Kathy and Bob DeCarli and Marianne Caporale
We have a new member, Deborah Hauck Welcome Deb. She already attended a Zoom meeting. She has two daughters. One will be attending Pitt this fall. Deb is interested in learning free motion quilting.
We now have 29 paid members.

I want to thank the Guild for my unexpected birthday gift! I'm looking forward to getting out to the store to use the gift card.
Stay well,
Kathy Timko

Ways & Means - Robin McMillen
No news on the Acorn Shoppe but I would like to share something interesting.  Over the summer, I helped two of my professional friends, one is a lawyer and one is a Phd Chemist working for Johnson and Johnson on Covid treatment.  I helped them learn about sewing and the wonders of having a sewing machine at home.  Both of these friends bought sewing machines, Bernette machines from the Country Store.  How cool is that?  They both are looking for a hobby since they are spending so much time at home and they also are trying to get their mind off their troubles.  Sewing is a great way to do that.  Hopefully they may consider joining our guild at some point.  Who knows?

All things domestic seem to be new again.

Charity Outreach - Elaine Mayer
Dear Quilters,
As we continue to ride out the pandemic I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. This is an uneasy time for some of us; maybe you are sewing more instead of going out.

Please keep our charities in the front of your minds. We continue with the food drive for the Honeybrook Food Pantry.  St Peter Parish has a monthly food drive and toiletries for Honeybrook Food Bank. There is a trailer in the parking lot and they collect the fourth Saturday and Sunday of every month (fourth full week). It is a no contact drop off. Kelly's church collects non perishable food items or toiletries, please call for hours it is open. You may either call me for a pick up or drop them off yourself.

We are continuing the Valor Quilts for Veteran patients of the Main Line Home Care and Hospice (Carolyn Davis has kits made up. Please contact her if you would like a kit. Additionally, we are making kids pillowcases for A Case for Smiles. I am happy to pick up your pillowcases and get them to a donation center.

We are also collecting the Chester Bears. Our last donation to Chester County Hospital included 16 Bears! Just yell for a pick up at your home
If you are so inclined to assist with Masks for Penn Care at Home, please let Rikki Newlander know that you have them.

I look forward to a face to face meeting at some point in the near future.
Are any of you interested in a socially distanced sew in? I could accommodate about 6-8 people in my home. Please email me at elainemaye@gmail.com if you have any interest.

Happy Stitching to you all!

Now I’m trying to make up for my lost lost March-June season for work and haven’t been in my studio for weeks
Hope everyone is well!

2020 Quilt Guild Challenge - Angela Brant

Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, this is my favorite time of all

Pick a season and make a small quilt or wall hanging that strongly evokes that season

Quilts/wall hangings will be judged by fellow quilt members in several categories:
  1. Best evokes season
  2. Best use of color
  3. Most original
  4. Best quilting
Basic Rules of the Challenge:
• #1 RULE: HAVE FUN!!! Use your imagination! Your creation can be traditional or contemporary.
• Item Selection: Your challenge must be a small quilt or wall hanging, not a tote bag, pocket book, vest or jacket, etc.
  • Finished Size: Your challenge can be any finished size you want.
  • • Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, machine appliqué, hand appliqué, machine or hand quilt, etc.). We encourage you to challenge yourself and be creative.
• Fabric Requirement: You can use whatever fabrics you want in your challenge. There is also no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used in your challenge.
• Embellishments: Embellishments are optional.

• Label: Make sure you put a label with your name on the back of your challenge. Give credit to the source that inspired you. Please cover up your label with a piece of paper before handing it in for voting at our guild meeting so it’s a secret as to who made it.
  • Due Date: Finished challenges are due at our April, 2020 guild meeting for judging by your quilt guild peers. All guild members attending the meeting will have the opportunity to vote anonymously for their favorite challenge quilt.
  • ALL QUILTS ENTERED IN THE CHALLENGE WILL BE DISPLAYED.If you have any questions about the challenge please contact Angela Brant at angelalendenbrant@gmail.com or 484-682-3871

Sampler Sew Along - Kelly Meanix
We are coming down the home stretch of our Sampler Sew Along. The last blocks will come out on October 1st, 2020. Are you keeping up or way behind? Do what you can and be sure to show us what you made no matter what the size. This was a way for the guild to work on a group project and we applaud everyone who made blocks.

I am so excited to see what everyone comes up with. Are you thinking about your setting? I am not sure what I am doing yet. I have included a picture of my quilt as of now. I did all the blocks except one, can you guess which one? Using your design wall will help if you are thinking about doing sashing and how big or small you want to make it or maybe not at all. The choice is yours.

Don't forget about the signature block. Write your name, the date, Sampler Sew Along, Penn Oaks, Pandemic 2020 whatever you want. This is a way to make it your very own. That white  piece on the block is very large and sticks out, so put something there.

If you have an odd number of blocks, feel free to duplicate a block you like. Maybe make it in different colors or just add a few four/nine patches if you are feeling like you just need to be done!

The goal will be to have the top together for the February meeting, that gives you 4 months. Extra kudos for having it quilted! The board has agreed to a Gift Card prize! I will pull a name from everyone who has completed their top just like last time. The only requirement is that 30 of the blocks that were sent out must be in the quilt. To take the pressure off, let's try and get it quilted by June 2021. Maybe (fingers crossed) we can meet in person and have an awesome show & tell for our last meeting of the year.

The extra paper pieced blocks do not need to be included but can count as your 30. And maybe an extra surprise!!!???? Questions? Call or email me. kellymx@aol.com  610-873-7211

My quilt includes the September blocks.

August 2020 Newsletter

President's Message - Lynn Telson

The year has started off with a ZOOM! Pun intended.

The executive board met in July to kick of this new year. As sad as it is to say, zoom has to become our friend.  I like the rest of you prefer face to face meetings. The church will allow us to meet with stringent requirements such as bringing our own chairs, no A/C or heat, sanitizing everything to name a few. The board has unanimously decided to continue with Zoom meetings for the guild at the present time. Board meetings will continue on Zoom after face to face has resumed for convenience of attendees.

In an effort to advertise our guild, we are opening our September Zoom meeting and presentation by Barb Vedder to friends at no charge. There is no limit to the number of people you invite to attend. Please email me with the names so I know who they are to admit them into the meeting.  In addition we will have an item to auction. Pictures to follow.

Please send me your show and tell pictures.  This will make it easier to see the items presented during the Zoom meeting.

We are in need of someone to handle our website. Jamie and her husband have done a nice job and are willing to pass it on to an interested person. Please email me directly if you are interested in managing our website.

Penn Oaks has many years of historical information. It was discussed at the board meeting to digitize this information and possibly post a snapshot of our history on social media. Given that, we need one or more persons that can take on the job of digitizing the information.  Please email me with your interest.

We are continuing with the door prize to all members and guests that attend our zoom meetings. If you have a donation, please contact Kathy DiCarli. All donors must be able to mail their item to the winner.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone as we Zoom 😢 our way through the year.

Programs - Jen Burke

Thanks everybody with your patience as we put out the schedule for next few months. Lynn has asked us to invite a friend to each of these programs if we can!

August Bee will be on Zoom

Everyone is welcome to join us from 5 pm to 9 pm on August 12, 2020 to sew and snack and share! Although I would rather be there in person, I forget so much when I travel that I’ll be able to just sew my brains out this time. I have planned a big deep clean of my sewing room before August 12th. I am not reminding myself that you can only see the wall behind me so this is not important….. A word to the wise, make sure you cut before you have that cocktail. Not a mistake you want to make twice!!!!!!!

September

Join us for a zoom session with Barb Vedder of fun with Barb. She will be presenting Sensational Solid Quilts. This will not be the same lecture for those of you who are also in Calico Cutters. This is a new lecture from Barb and I’m excited that we get to participate in this brand new lecture.

Ways & Means - Robin McMillen

Hi Quilters
With the current environment, I do not envision our Acorn Shoppe Sale happening anytime soon.  I have some materials collected that I am storing in my garage and I am hoping for some help.  If anyone has some space to spare in their home to hold these items I would be so thankful.  I have a large home but, we are all working and attending school from home so we are using every nook and cranny.  No one wants to zoom with their teachers from the bed room right?  Please call me on my cell if you have some space to offer.  I promise to mask up and drive my station wagon over and stack it neatly where you have space.  My cell is (610)836-1363.  The items will all fit in one load of my outback station wagon.  This should give you an idea of how much stuff.  There is a vintage sewing machine some fabric and books and a few household items.

On another note:
I had an idea and I was wondering if anyone was interested in working with me.  For those of you who are newer members, we have some quilters in the guild that make soldier quilts to donate to veterans.  Delores Holzwarth has made hundreds of soldier quilts.  I have been feeling very discouraged with our current environment.  There is so much misery and there are members of our community that are on the front lines of this pandemic.  I am particularly thankful for all the nurses that work so hard.  We have a charity quilt committee in our guild and I thought it might be nice to do something similar to soldier quilts but send them to nurses.  We would need to design requirements for the quilt so they would have a unifying theme/color or pattern.  Then we would need to find a way to identify the nurses that would be most deserving.  If anyone is interested in this idea, please email me robin_mcmillen@yahoo.com.  We could start with our guild but maybe reach out to others.  I got the idea from a news segment on CBS Sunday Morning news about an amateur painter that is painting ER nurses portraits and donating the portraits to the nurses.  Here is the video on Youtube.  Warning -- you will need some tissues.  I was literally sobbing.

Thank you

Membership - Kathy & Bob DeCarli and Marianne Caporale

Hi ladies We now have received 24 Membership forms. If you are not able to print the membership forms please alert us and we will mail them to you snail mail, and you can return them in the same way. We have a few checks without forms. Thanks. Please remember the amount for dues this year is $20.00.

Community Outreach - Elaine Mayer

Hello Fellow Quilters,
There has been discussion that because we are a smaller group and our efforts were interrupted by COVID, we would consider keeping our current charities for one more year. I like the idea and I think it makes sense. So, keep making those Chester Bears, juvenile pillowcases and keep the Honeybrook Food Pantry in your mind. And, remember I am happy to collect any food donations or you may drop them off at the trailer at Kelly's church (St Peter Parish, Downingtown). They collect non perishable food items the fourth full week of each month (this weekend).

We would like to continue the quilts of valor for Main Line Health Hospice patients. Carolyn Davis has several kits ready to go, for those of you who have time for a charity quilt. You could always share a kit with a friend if the whole thing seems too daunting.

Stay safe and mindful of hand hygiene during the next few months.

Guild Bees

Hi  I am the founding Mother of the Chatalaine Bee better known at The Chats. We meet in the daytime  at  the homes of our members . We are a friendly group but,. since we can’t meet face to face we are presently meeting on Zoom. We began as a group of hand appliquers, but we now bring our own hand work. We formerly brought our lunch and the hostess provided coffee and dessert. We work and talk about quilting and solve the problems of the world  We talk and laugh give advice share new quilting techniques and ,our favorite new books . We would welcome new members , we don’t get a lot of work done but at times like these  the laughs are the best part.

Quilters are loving people. Who doesn’t need more of that at times like these.
Prayers , and laughs Kathy DeCarli

Queen Bees - Social group of 11 who meet once a month on a Friday night to enjoy each other's friendship and share experiences -- both quilting and life.  Meeting dates are chosen to suit bee member availability and are typically scheduled 6-9 months out at a time.   With 11 bee members we max out our dining room's table space so at this point in time we are not open to new members.  Maureen Carlson
2021 Getaway

Hello quilters! Our Getaway is still on the calendar. We recognize the uncertainties of the times we are in, but we are taking a cautiously optimistic view that we will be able to have our Getaway. We will continue to hold the Getaway at the Amish View Inn & Suites at 3125 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. Next year, the Getaway dates are February 17-21. We will decide at a later date if the Getaway reservations will be accepted in October or November. The sewing room fee is $450 plus 6% tax; this amount will be shared equally by all attendees. In early fall we'll work with the Amish View Inn to determine the number of quilters the sewing room can safely accommodate.
The room rates (including tax) for a single/double room will be $116.65 for Wednesday/Thursday nights, and $166.50 for Friday/Saturday nights. A deposit of $100.00 per room will hold your reservation. Come for one night, two, three or all four nights to sew, shop and visit with your fellow members. Take a look at the Amish View Inn web site (www.AmishViewInn.com) to learn about this wonderful venue. Please give some thought to the Getaway and let us know your feelings and/or interest in having this event.

Show & Tell

Here is my latest quilt, The Pathway.
When I was a sophomore in college, I did some house work for
my humanities professor. He was also an editor for a New York
publishing company so he paid me in Poetry books. One of the poems
has haunted me for sixty years and almost cost me my job. I made the quilt
in hopes that it would go away, but I doubt it.

July 2020 Newsletter

President's Letter
As we roll into summer and a new year, I am hopeful, soon, we will be able to meet in person. I am looking forward to working with all guild members.
Our numbers have dwindled. For any organization to succeed we need new members. If anyone has ideas on how to attract new members, please reach out to me.
The new board will meet in July to firm up the year. I know Jen has been working hard to secure programs given our current situation.
Have a safe and fun summer.

Lynn Telson

Programs - Jen Burke

I have taken over programs for next year and want to thank Denise for a job well done. It’s been crazy, but I’m so glad that we get to “see” each other on zoom! I don’t know about you, but this pandemic shut down my “escapes” (quilt meetings, quilt shopping, petting pretty fabric) so it’s so nice to be able to meet even if I am in my own quilting room. To maintain our connections, we still will be having the bee August. For now, the bee is virtual.  But we will be zooming, chatting, and snacking as we quilt. All the neighboring guilds had to change our programs drastically, so the year I had planned is not the year we will have, but it will be FANTASTIC! Can’t wait to “see” you in August!

Summer Mystery Quilt? - Jen Burke

Anyone want to “meet” and do a mystery quilt together?

I’m a lover of mystery quilts. I do Cheryl’s (Meadow Mist Designs) mystery quilt every year and I love it every time. Last year I did 2 different colorways, just because I love her quilts. The year before I added a second colorway mid-mystery, so I decided just to start earlier.

Anyway, she has a mystery starting July 2nd. Would anyone be interested in “getting together” on zoom and working on the mystery with me? Underneath is the picture of the quilt I did one year to give you a good example.

If you’re interested in “meeting” and doing the mystery quilt together, email me at usnmcdoc@yahoo.com

How is it going? Has everyone caught up with the blocks? Are you enjoying the bonus blocks?
I will no longer be sending out bonus blocks on the 15th of the month. Those were the paper pieced only blocks. Starting in July we will go back to blocks coming out the first of the month. Questions? Call or email me.

June 2020 Newsletter

President's Letter
Hello Guild members!!

We are still asking for photos of your projects! Sadly, I haven’t had any extra time...I’ve had to work full time through this all. And whether you’ve been home or have also had to go out to work, I do know that we are all mindful to take precautions to keep ourselves safe. That is the thought the board members and I have when we had decided to do virtual meetings, for our safety, pet the governor’s mandate and to continue a way to stay connected to one another as a whole group.
We had not gone into this decision as a means to replace our meetings to virtual on a permanent basis, but only use it temporarily. I still prefer the face to face interactions myself! And I’m sure most of you do, too.
Plus, we are looking into still providing a entertaining program with searching for virtual speakers. And uniquely so, we have thought this may be a positive advantage...we may now start to widen our search for speakers from locally to all over the country...and maybe even globally!!
It’s rather exciting to think about. But it’s still a challenge to see if “regular” speakers are willing to change their methods to go virtual. Fingers crossed!
In the meantime, please bear with us and know we want to provide a good experience within our guild. We are still here to support one another in all manners.
So, we do plan to have another virtual meeting for June. And I will be announcing the winner of the Volunteer award at that time. I hope to see you there!!

Helen Hofbauer

Membership - Kathy & Bob DeCarli and Marianne Caporale
Hi All
We had a very successful meeting on Zoom with 23 attendees. Our only downside was we could only speak one at a time. These virtual meetings can be fun. We had members attending for whom it is difficult to come out late in the day. I can’t wait to see how the speakers can adjust to our new way of life. I am so impressed with the way how people have made the necessary changes.

The motion was made and seconded by e-mail to accept the following slate of candidates for the coming year’s board. The election was conducted by email having the voting deadline of April 30th. There were no dissenting votes and the following were elected to be the 2020-2021 Penn Oaks Board:

President:  Lynn Telson
Programs:  Jen Burke
Recording Secretary:  Kelly Meanix
Corresponding Secretary:   Maureen Carlson
Ways & Means:   Robin McMillen
Treasurer:   Ellen McMillen
Membership:   Bob and Kathy DeCarli and Marianne Caporale(Not a board member)

We are still actively looking for a Programs Assistant who will shadow and assist Jen Burke this year while planning the 2021-2022 Penn Oaks programs.  This is a two year commitment.  Please consider volunteering for this vital position and support your guild.  The 2020-2021 guild year is not considered to be a board position though the program assistant typically attends board meetings.  During the 2021-2022 guild year, you will be the Programs board member and have a programs assistant whom you will mentor and train.   Here is a brief position description:
-      Assist current year Programs person while learning how they developed and managed getting speakers for the guild.
-      While not every guild meeting is a speaker, there is some sort of activity or program.  Work with current board  and other guild members in the development of these non-speaker meetings.  Examples of such programs are:  Holiday Party; Challenge meeting; Sew-In’s – i.e. charity night sewing, et al.
-      Manage speaker and program costs to approved programs budget
-      Determine speakers by networking with other guilds and consider speaker recommendations from any Penn Oaks members as a potential program speaker.
-      Arrive early to meetings and help set-up the venue for speaker use.  Welcome speaker to the guild when they arrive.  Assist speakers with travel/directions and hotel recommendations as applicable
-      Communicate with speakers and as part of engagement for providing a program to the guild, ensure that Penn Oak’s speaker contract is signed by the speaker and returned to the guild stating the agreed upon fee and other expenses.  Provide copies of this signed contract to both the President (for co-signature) and Treasurer (for check payment).
-      Communicate program lineup to guild membership via the Penn Oaks newsletter, send programs listing to the Website Chairperson and Social Media people.
-      -Enjoy having the ability to determine and enjoy programs that are your interests. Get to know people in the guild better as well as quilting industry leaders through these interactions.
IF interested reach out to Kelly Meanix or Maureen Carlson

Dear Quilters!
I'm sure many of you have been busy sewing masks and scrub hats. Your efforts are appreciated more than you will ever know.

For all of you who continue to work on the Chester Bears, please hold onto them a little while longer. Also, if you have pillowcases, we will collect them in September.
Again, thank you for all you do. If anyone is in need of fabric for charitable sewing, PLEASE let me know.

The 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote was ratified in August 1920 making this year the 100th anniversary.  I’ve been following the Pennsylvania Piecemaker blog written by Michele McLaughlin who was one of our speakers last June (Can you believe it’s been a year????).  She’s has some interesting posts in this Blog.   The COVID-19 pandemic has shuttered many planned exhibits and events planned to celebrate this anniversary so I’m going to wrap up this series with this last newsletter article.  Hopefully some of you will find another topic of interest to periodically share your readings with guild members.
For this last post, I’d like to highlight this Pennsylvania Piecemaker entry  - Suffrage Cookbooks!!!!   http://pennsylvaniapiecemaker.blogspot.com/2020/04/suffrage-cookbooks.html)
This post especially caught my attention with the 2nd paragraph talking about sourdough bread.   One of my Mother’s Day gifts this year was a loaf of homemade sourdough bread made by my wonderful son-is-law!!!  He’s promised me some starter to make my own.  Does this sound familiar?  Many new articles today are highlighting how people are cooking more while staying home – including Michele’s co-author Beth and her daughter making sourdough bread.  What have you been cooking recently????
I know I’ve delved back into my old cookbooks and even resurrected some of my Mother’s old, old recipes again.  Talk about what’s old is new again…..   The blog post contains links to two suffrage cookbooks that are now e-books in the public domain.  I’ve spent some time looking through these cookbooks and am amazed at the number of recipes that are basically the same as recipes in more modern cookbooks that we use for every day meals!!!!  Including in the 1886 cookbook a recipe for spaghetti using boxed spaghetti pasta!!!!   (We have a weekly pasta night –do you????)    There is also a recipe for a "Lancaster County Pie" that seems very similar to what we know as Shoo Fly Pie!

I hope you enjoy looking at the Pennsylvania Piecemaker Blog entries and have learned more about our ancestors, their struggles to obtain many of the privileges we take for granted today as well as having many of the same “Trials and Tribulations” as we have today (i.e. 1918 pandemic and political activism with widely differing points of view, et al).

Fun Tool!

At our last Zoom meeting, Jen Burke alerted us to this cool bias tape maker made using a 3D printer.
You can read all about it and see a video HERE , the site is called Purple Hobbies. Check it out, thanks Jen for the tip! Another reason to join us for our Zoom meetings!

Interested in finding out more about your ancestry?
All you need is a library card with the Chester County Library. While the library is closed you can log into your account and access Ancestry.com remotely. You will see the link on your account log-in page. There are literally billions of records to aid you in your search. You can review the US Census from 1790 to 1940 (1950 will not be available for another two years), birth, marriage and death records, and immigration and travel records. You'll find published stories, memories and family histories that may have information about your family. And tons of other stuff! Just a warning - this can be addicting. Note that Ancestry.com has been available on the library computers and may not be available remotely once the library re-opens.

Recipe
Hi quilters I wanted to share a recipe that I especially love this time of year.

Warm Tomato Salad from Pioneer Woman.  This is the tomato salad I served at the getaway and it is always a hit.
It is delicious served over greens or added to a sandwich wrap.

I also invented my own Sriracha Mayo when we ran out and I had to make due.  It is spicy but it is great with some pan fried tilapia or on an omelet.

1/2 Cup Mayo
2 TBSP Sriracha hot sauce
1 1./2 TBSP Sesame Oil
1 TBSP Sugar
1 1/2 TBSP Cider Vinegar
1/2 tsp mustard (I used Dijon)
1/2 tsp granulated garlic.

I enjoyed visiting with you all on the meeting.  I look forward to seeing you in June.
